Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Design Your Room

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 8th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE6.EE.2c Evaluate expressions at specific values for their variables.
Include expressions that arise from formulas in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including
those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a
particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas 𝑉 = 𝑠3 and 𝐴 = 6𝑠2 to find the volume and
surface area of a cube with sides of length 𝑠 = 1/2.

Technology Standard Addressed: Global Collaborator

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

Virtual Architecture
URL(s) to support the lesson: https://virtual-architecture.wm.edu

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
The online project is going to be introduced after the warmup and pre-assessment. The students will be
directed to the website in order to get a mental note of what calculations will be needed to complete this
extended assignment. The hands-on capability is measurable in this collaboration site. Great tool for this
generation of technological savvy students.

The UDL guidelines have hit the highest level is the developing of this lesson plan. The students will acquire
several skills that can be used beyond the classroom. The level of creativity and potential that can occur with
the understanding of area from the tools that are highlighted in this project will be engrained into the minds
of the students.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom? The
online project has the built-in software that mimics an AutoCAD platform that is easier to manipulate for this
grade level.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: The students will interact with peers inside and outside of the classroom to create a more
interesting dynamic. Advice and support are available from teachers and professionals in the design
field.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): All work is original and for the design of the student’s
personal space.

c. Higher-order thinking: Student must apply analyzing and reasoning skills to implement a new skill that
has not be used previous and that is using floor planning software.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Other
students as well as professionals, ideas from the students can be used to inspire new design.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students with visual and hearing impairments will have successful;
outcomes in this lesson because iMovie has been selected as the technology tool. The UDL principles are
clearly explained. The why is to find out the area to be able to calculate amount of materials needed. The
what is the area of a square which is represented by their room at home. Lastly the how is use of technology
tools for understanding. This software will give a visual of floor plan as well as virtual tour of the space.
Giving images in 3-D
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: The lesson will be implemented using technology
of choice to present body of work. Suggestions are PowerPoint and video. Internet safety is enforced because
the software is contained in a .edu site that protects students from unauthorized viewing.

Reflective Practice: The lesson has reached the highest Bloom level and the highest LoTi due to the fact
students will be able to post work onto the .edu site where the virtual architecture software is stored. I am
excited to see the outcome of the students work that began from the standard of area of a square. This
standard has grown exponentially, and the students will benefit from this lesson.
