Grading scale and grading rule for courses at the Department of Informatics

On completion of the course students are awarded one of the following grades: Pass with Distinction, Pass or Fail.
An opportunity for retaking a test is provided a short time period after the regular examination opportunity.

Grading rule:

Each test that can be awarded the grade of Pass with Distinction must also be assigned a grade point on the scale 5 to
9, or Fail. A final grade for the course will be awarded when all tests have been successfully completed.

The arithmetical mean value of all tests that can be awarded Pass with Distinction is calculated, using as weights the
higher education credits for each test. If this mean value is at least 7.5 the final grade on the course in its entirety will
be Pass with Distinction.

If at least 75 percent of the credits available for tests that can be awarded the grade of Pass with Distinction have
been awarded this grade, the final grade on the course will be Pass with Distinction.

In all other cases the grade of Pass will be awarded.

Clarification of the grading rule:

• Grading of tests: Grades are awarded according to the percentage spans in the table below. A test can usually
be awarded a maximum of 100 points, which simplifies the calculation.

• Courses in which students accumulate points on a number of assignments are graded as tests.

% Grade
0 - 49 Fail
50 - 59 5
60 – 69 6
70 – 79 7
80 – 89 8
90 - 100 9

Accordingly, the grade for a test is a whole number. Irrespective of whether the sum is 50 or 59 the grade is 5. This
whole number is used for calculating the final grade on the course. Consequently at least 80 percent is required for a
grade of Pass with Distinction.

• Tests that can be awarded Pass with Distinction but have no specified point figures for each assignment, for
example case analyses or reports: the grades awarded are whole numbers from 5 to 9, or Fail.
