Artist Profile: Visual Arts

Name: JUALIM DATILES VELA,Ph.D.

Dr. Jualim D. Vela is both an artist and an educational development instructor/researcher. He earned
his PhD and MA degrees (majoring Educational Development) at the Graduate School for International
Development and Cooperation at Hiroshima University under the Japanese Ministry of Education
Scholarship.

Prior to his studies on Educational Development, Dr. Vela waa a research student i fine arts at the
Graduate School of Fine Arts at Hiroshima City University, also under the Japanese Ministry of Education
scholarship.

Dr. Vela also earned his 1st Master's degree in Education majoring Educational Technology at the
University of the Philippines, Diliman.

He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts majoring Visual Communication also at the University of
the Philippines, Diliman.

Dr. Vela was also a former scholar at the Philippine High School for the Arts where he finished high
school majoring visual arts.

After graduating college, he was invited to teach Visual Arts at the Philippine High School for the Arts. He
taught there for 8 years until he was given a scholarship by the Japan Ministry of Education.

In Visual Arts. He participated in several exhibitions both here and abroad.

He has participated in visual arts exhibitions at the Cultural Center if the Philippines, Nova Art Gallery,
Art Anton Gallery, The Vargas Museum, the GSIS museum, Nineveh Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Vietnam,
Metrobank and the HigashiHiroshima Prefectural Museum in Japan.

Dr. Vela's visual artworks include abstract and figurative painting ( in oil, watercolor and acrylic
mediums), terracotta sculpture, woodworks and metal (brass and stainless steel) sculptures.
Dr. Vela's visual arts concepts focuses on homages to Ancient Filipino beliefs on spirituality, soul boats,
socialization, social issues, utilization of the basic elements and principles of visual arts in a simplified
form, pop art and the concept of deconstruction.

He was one of the finalists and Philippine representatives to the 2001 OITA Sculpture Competition in
Japan, he was also one of the semifinalist in the sculpture category of thr 2004 METROBANK ARt and
Design competition.

In the field of research, Dr. Vela has published research papers in 3 international journals. Furthermore
he has presented his researches in several international fora in Cambodia, Japan and in the USA.
