I)Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follows: (1*4=4)

Was it cowardice, that I dared not kill him? Was it perversity,that I longed to talk to
him? Was it humility, to feel so honoured?
I felt so honoured.
And yet those voices:
If you were not afraid, you would kill him!

a) What are the doubts and questions that arise inside the poet?
b) Explain: “Yet those voices.”
c) What was the poet’s dilemma?
d) What did he consider to be humility?

Now the nightingale inspired,
Flushed with confidence, and fired
With both art and adoration,
Sang-and was a huge sensation.
Animals for miles around
Flocked towards the magic sound,
And the frog with great precision

d) What does the poet compare the snake’s drinking habits to? Why?

III) Answer the following questions in 100-120 words. (1*8=8)

Whenever we act against the voice of our conscience, the result is suffering. Elucidate
this statement with reference to the poet’s action against the snake and its consequences.

OR
Time is the greatest leveller and brings mightiest of the might to their knees. How far
this statement is relevant in the context of the poems ‘Ozymandias’ and ‘Not Marble
Nor the Glided Monuments’.
