In 1967 Martin Seligman did a shocking (literally) experiment - he put two

dogs in harnesses and gave them both electric shocks at random
intervals.

Each dog had a small lever they could press to make the shock stop, but only
one of the dog's levers worked. The other dog's lever did nothing.
