The Corporation of Chennai is the largest generator of solid waste estimated at 3000 tonnes per day.

It has a network of transfer stations and two land fill sites at Kodungaiyur and Perungudi.

CUURENT PRACTICE:

Solid Waste from the Chennai Corporation area is taken to the Transfer Stations and from there it is
finally disposed off at two designated disposal sites viz. Kodungaiyur located at Northern part of City
and Perungudi an adjoining village in the south. Both the sites are located in low lying areas and are
adjacent to the Metro Water Sewage Treatment Works.

PROBLEMS :

As the flood waters started to recede, one of the main issues that the city of Chennai
grappled with in the aftermath of the recent floods was the clearing of tonnes of garbage
strewn all across the city

ALTERNATIVES:

I. Reduce: Buy only what you need because a better way to reduce waste is by not
creating it.
II. Reuse: If you have to acquire goods, try getting used ones or obtaining substitutes.
III. Recycle: When discarding your waste, find ways to recycle it instead of letting it go to
landfill.
