Paper Title
A novel feature set for automatic diaphyseal tibial fracture classification from x-ray images
Abstract
In orthopaedics, fracture detection is considered as one of the challenging tasks withx-ray as an imaging modality. The paper presents a novel feature
set for classification of x-ray images of bone fractures using artificial neural network. The images, acquired from radiologists, comprise of three types of
diaphyseal tibial fractures, namely, simple, wedge and complex fractures. The local features are defined in consultation with Orthopaedicians such as
Hough lines, texture values, intersection points, number of fragments and local binary pattern are deployed in the workand reduced based on the
performance of classifier with individual features. A total of 29 features are defined and further reduced to three which are F12- Hough lines combined
with texture feature, F34- intersection points combined with number of fragments and F135- Hough lines combined with intersection points and local
binary pattern featuregiving 98.59% accuracy. Exhaustive experimentation is carried using five individual features, combination of two, three, four and
five features to obtain a novel feature set. Results are compared with cited and existing fracture detection methods and found encouraging. The
proposed method is sensitive to the inclusion of additional datasets. The work finds useful for Orthopaedic practitioners.
