Things to Know about Warm Mix Asphalt

 Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) is a variant of the asphalt mixes that allow to reduce the
mixing and paving temperature, by 200C – 400C lower than the Hot Mix Asphalt.
 Warm-mix asphalt has been used successfully in Europe for more than 10 years.
 In the United States, WMA projects are now in more than 40 States.

Following are some of the benefits of Warm Mix Asphalt that has promoted the
increased usage of WMA for road construction:

Environmental Impact
 Lower temperatures of the asphalt mix implies the reduction in the fuel required.

 The lower temperature required for heating inadvertently reduces the carbon emissions
released in to the ozone.

 The reduced fumes/emissions offers better working conditions for the asphalt workers while
paving, as workers inhale less smoke and dust, especially in closed spaces like tunnels where
ventilation is comparatively lesser.
Cost Effective
 Warm Mix Asphalt is far more cost effective as compared to the hot mix with virtually identical
results.

 It can also be easily transportable from the plant to the construction site, which reduces the
efforts and saves the time by facilitating easier laying.

 Faster cooling of WMA reduces the construction time, which in turn saves the cost as the men
and machinery are required for a shorter time span.

 Warm Mix is the future of asphalt, providing both environmental benefits as well as
better working conditions, thus allowing us to take a step towards a greener &
sustainable future.
