In the event that the Standby Battery fails to pass initial test: continue with the checklist to
start the engine (with the engine running the Standby Battery should be charged by the
alternator). Complete the Before Takeoff Run-Up checklist, then place the Alternator and
Master Switches in the OFF position and check the Standby Battery essential bus voltage. Do
not place the STBY BATT SWITCH in the TEST position. A 24-volt (or greater) indication on the
Voltmeter ensures that the Standby Battery is within limits for normal operations.
During cold weather starting, the test lamp may not illuminate and the BUS E volts may be
less than 24 before turning on the Master Switch. After engine start, verify the S BATT
ammeter shows a charge (positive) at 1000 RPM or greater. Prior to takeoff, verify the S BATT
ammeter shows a charge less than 0.4 amps.

Low Voltage at High RPM (LOW VOLTS / STBY BATT)

Illumination of LOW VOLTS on the annunciator may occur during low RPM conditions with an
electrical load on the system, such as during a low RPM taxi. Under these conditions, the light
will extinguish at a higher RPM, not requiring a recycling of the Master Switch since an
overvoltage condition has not occurred. Set throttle for 1000 RPM. If the LOW VOLTS
annunciator remains illuminated, Fleet Maintenance department must perform electrical
system inspection prior to flight.
Alternator switch .......................................................................................................off
Alternator circuit breaker ......................................................................... check (reset)
Master switch (alt and batt) ...................................................................................... on
Low volts annunciator ................................................................................ checked off

Emergency Operation in Clouds

If the engine-driven vacuum pump fails in flight, the standby attitude indicator will not be
accurate. The pilot must then rely on the attitude and heading information (from the AHRS)
shown on the PFD indicators.
If the AHRS unit fails in flight (red Xs shown through the PFD attitude and heading indicators),
the pilot must rely on the standby attitude indicator and non-stabilized magnetic compass for
attitude and heading information.

Priming / Starting Procedures

Cold Start – Oil Temperature Below 120°F

Mixture control ........................................................................... full forward (full rich)
[until fuel flow stabilized (approx. 3 - 5 seconds), then idle cut-off]
Auxiliary fuel pump ...................................................................................................off
Throttle ............................................................................................................. open ¼”
Continue with Engine Start checklist on page 4.

Hot Start – Oil Temperature At or Greater Than 120°F

Prime ......................................................................................................... not required
Continue with Engine Start checklist on page 4.
Hot weather starting procedures depend upon how soon the next engine start is attempted.
Within the first 20 to 30 minutes after shutdown, the fuel manifold is adequately primed and
the empty injector nozzle lines will fill before the engine dies (no additional priming should be
needed). However, after approximately 30 minutes, the vaporized fuel in the manifold will
have nearly dissipated and some “slight” priming could be required to refill the nozzle lines
and keep the engine running after initial start.

If a Flooded Engine Is Suspected

Auxiliary fuel pump ...................................................................................................off

Mixture control ........................................................................................... idle cut-off
Throttle ............................................................................................... ½ to full forward
Starter................................................................................................................ engage
After engine starts:
Mixture control ........................................................................... full forward (full rich)
Throttle ...........................................................................................................1000 rpm
Continue with Engine Start checklist on page 4.
If the engine fails to start, wait several minutes for the fuel to drain from the cylinders before
attempting a subsequent restart. Waiting time will depend on ambient air temperatures,
engine temperatures, and battery voltage. If a subsequent start attempt is unsuccessful,
contact the Fleet Maintenance Department.

Autopilot Test Procedures

Bendix/King KAP 140

CAUTION
The entire preflight test procedure must be successfully completed prior to each flight. Use of
the autopilot or manual electrical trim system is prohibited prior to completion of these tests.
To ensure proper functioning, CHECK the AUTOPILOT/ELECTRIC TRIM as follows:
When the AVIONICS BUS 2 SWITCH is turned ON, power will be supplied to the
computer and the AUTOPILOT will begin a Self-TEST. The TEST is complete by all
display elements coming on (Display TEST), the PITCH TRIM annunciator on the PFD
coming on, and the disconnect tone sounding.

WARNING
If the red P annunciator on the face of the AUTOPILOT stays on, the AUTOPILOT has failed the
preflight test. Open (pull) the AUTOPILOT circuit breaker to make sure that the autopilot and
manual electric trim system will not operate.
1. TEST the manual ELECTRIC TRIM
a. Push the LH SWITCH forward and hold. Verify the elevator trim wheel does
not move.
b. Pull the LH SWITCH aft and hold. Verify the elevator trim wheel does not
move.
c. Push the RH SWITCH forward and hold. Verify the elevator trim wheel does
not move and the red PT light comes on.
d. Pull the RH SWITCH aft and hold. Verify the elevator trim wheel does not
move and the red PT light comes on.
e. Push and pull both the LH and RH SWITCHES at the same time. Verify the
elevator trim wheel moves in the direction commanded.
f. While commanding manual ELECTRIC TRIM, press the AP DISC/TRIM INT
switch down and hold. The elevator trim wheel should not move.
2. Set the local altimeter setting on the AUTOPILOT.
3. Engage the AUTOPILOT by pressing the AP button.
4. Move the flight controls fore, aft, left, and right to verify that the autopilot can
be overpowered in both pitch and roll axis.

Rev. 17 22 07-20-2016
Cessna 172S Nav III Checklist Supplement

5. Press the AP DISC/TRIM INT switch and verify that the AUTOPILOT disconnects
and the disconnect tone sounds.
6. Manually set the trim wheel to the takeoff position.
Garmin GFC 700 AFCS

CAUTION
The GFC 700 AFCS preflight test must be successfully completed prior to use of the autopilot,
flight director, or manual electrical trim.
To ensure proper functioning, CHECK the AUTOPILOT/ELECTRIC TRIM as follows:
1. Ensure the AVIONICS BUS 2 SWITCH is on.
2. Verify the black-on-white PFT annunciation appears underneath the AFCS
Status Box, indicating the system is performing the preflight test. An aural alert
sounds at the completion of the test.
If the AP DISC button is pushed during power up or the preflight test, the test may fail or
never begin. Recycle power to the autopilot servos by turning the AVIONICS BUS 2 SWITCH
off then back on to restart the procedure.
3. Verify the white-on-red PFT annunciation is not displayed underneath the AFCS
Status Box. No other AFCS Status Annunciations should be displayed.
4. Verify the FD and AP are not engaged by observing a blank AFCS Status Box.
