Methods that encourage an interest in science

Nowadays we often hear that the government should not invest a lot on scientific research and spend

the budget on “more” important matters instead. This lack of appreciation to scientists and their

research responds to general misinformation about the role they play when, for instance, finding cures

against diseases. A greater recognition from our community to scientists should be created. But how

might this be reached?

One possible method would be to allow adults have the opportunity to learn excellent science in

different and more attractive ways than the traditional ones, for example, attending free lectures and

workshops while visiting museum, parks or cafés. This may be more beneficial for them since it might

be difficult for some to return to formal education because they did not use to enjoy science at school.

A second tactic the government might take is to make a greater invest of money on science research

after people had been aware of the great job scientists do and how it positively impact their lives. To

achieve that, it is necessary to increase media coverage. The government could ask TV companies to

emphasize scientific discoveries as something we all need.

As I see it, the first of these approaches should be implemented. Once it is done, people will empathize

with scientists and change their minds about research. We will see people is asking for more scientific

proposals rather than complaining about it.
