Thesis writing workshop

This workshop is three hours long and is jointly facilitated by the Dean for Postgraduate
Studies and a member of the Learning Institute.
The workshop consists of a structured talk with several break-out sessions. There will be
plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Students are asked to bring along a thesis from
their research group/centre.

By the end of the session participants should:

 Understand the purpose and scope of a thesis

 Have considered the style and structure of the thesis, and university regulations
governing the thesis

 Understand what may and may not be included in a thesis and how to
acknowledge any joint work.

 Have considered whether it is desirable for their thesis to be ‘embargoed’

 Have identified practical ways in which the thesis may be planned, drafted and
completed and understand the role of their supervisor in this process

 Have identified some writing tools and strategies to help them get started (and
keep going!)

 Have more confidence in their ability to write the thesis
