I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
a. Review the 8 types of Figurative Language
b. Enumerate the 5 Elements of a Short Story
c. Identify the 5 elements of a short story in the excerpt Hands of the Black
II. Subject Matter:
Elements of a Short Story
Hands of the Black

III. Materials:

IV. Procedure:
A. Preparation:
Start with a prayer, greet the students and ask them to sit properly.
B. Motivation
Teacher will show picture of a black hand, a boy and white people. Teacher will
ask the students to describe the picture.
C. Lesson Proper
A short story is a work of short, narrative prose that is usually centered around one single
event. It usually composes of five elements which are;

A. Characters - Characterization deals with how the characters in the story are
described. In short stories there are usually fewer characters compared to a
novel. They usually focus on one central character or protagonist.
B. Setting is a description of where and when the story takes place.
C. Plot - The plot is the main sequence of events that make up the story.
D. Conflict - Conflict or tension is usually the heart of the short story and is related to
the main character. In a short story there is usually one main struggle.
E. Theme – the central idea of a short - story
D. Activity
Students will be asked to read the excerpt Hands of the Black and they need to
identify the five elements of a short story in the excerpt.

E. Generalization
Knowing the five elements of a short story is important because it will help us
comprehend a story that we read.
F. Evaluation.
Identify what kind of element is used in the following examples.
1. Once upon a time.
2. Romeo and Juliet.
3. He lost everything after the fire.
4. He succeeded with all his plans.
5. They live happily ever after.

G. Assignment:
What is an adjective? What are the types of adjectives?
