Modal pattern memorisation – using 3rds by Brandon Reihana

A pattern emerges when you play modes at different intervals. Just like there are 7 notes in
the major scale there are 7 patterns to playing the modes at certain intervals.
In this lesson we are looking at playing every 3rd mode until you end up at the beginning

Eg:

Ionian Dorian Phrygian Lydian Mixolydian Aeolian Locrian

Ionian Dorian Phrygian Lydian Mixolydian Aeolian Locrian

As you can see above, a pattern has emerged. The underlined and bold modes reveal this
pattern, once you hit Aeolian you start from Ionian and repeat. When you have memorised
this pattern you will be able to jump to and from any mode using 3rds.
