In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Abigail Williams, the protagonist is blamed for witch trials in

Salem. Throughout the story, she is depicted as “a lying, cold, snivelling women,” Her behaviour can
partially be said to be the result of the community she was raised in, however, ultimately it was
Abigail’s own actions that caused such a riot within Salem.

In the play, Abigail is an orphan who is portrayed as a villain, her parents were killed when she was a
child, so she grew up in a horrible environment without any parents, with these circumstances, she
was encouraged to have lustful and selfish desires, however throughout the play, Abigail illustrated
that she has her own opinion.

Abigail’s actions were influenced by her environment to a certain extent, but she had her own free
will and was never forced to do anything and she is in charge of her own behaviour and choose to do
what she did.
