CAUSE

Poverty is the primary cause of prostitution, but also a secondary cause, running into the other social
conditions. In the United States are 6,000,000 women wage- workers, employed in the gainful indus-
tries. In New York City are 300,000 wage-earning women, living upon the brink of starvation. The wages
which they earn scarcely provide them with the meager necessities of life; of the
joys of life they have but little. Many of them cannot live upon their wages
and must supplement them from other sources; many have others depending
upon them.

CONSEQUENCES

Prostitutes are at risk and the target of ritual killers who may consider them easy targets or use the
religious and social stigma associated with prostitutes as justification for their murder. Being criminals in
most jurisdictions, prostitutes are less likely than the law-abiding to be looked for by police if they
disappear, making them favored targets of predators.

Prostitution is associated with the spread of transmitted diseases (STDs) such as HIV. One of the main
reasons for the rapid spread of HIV in some areas is the massive transmission among sex workers/clients
and other sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, pelvic inflammatory
diseases and syphilis. The risk for HIV infection is increase because of multiple sex partners and
limited safe sex practice. Some customers are willing to pay more for a sexual encounter if they
do not have to use a condom. Other health issues associated with prostitution are early pregnancy
for juveniles, rape, tuberculosis, post traumatic stress disorder, assault and other act of violence.
Weitzer (2012) argued that, street prostitution is not victimless as it may damage the reputation
and quality of life in the neighborhood and diminish the value of property. Prostitution also
lowers the value as well as degrades the status of women.

LINKAGES

Kimberly & Workowski, (2010) have found that, there is strong co-occurrence between prostitution,
drug use, drug selling and involvement in non drug crime, particularly property crime. Because
prostitution is considered criminal in many jurisdictions, its substantial revenue are not contributing to
the tax revenues of the State and its workers are not routinely screened for
sexually transmitted diseases which is dangerous in cultures favoring unprotected sex and lead to
significant expenditure in health services.

Sex Trafficking and the Sex Trade are Intricately Linked: Trafficking is the means through which
traffickers, pimps and other exploiters bring victims to meet the demand: the Sex Trade

FACTORS:

* In urban areas are weak relations, which is also a base of new entrants in sex industry. Girls from
migrated families are joining the field and those who are living for education or job purpose. Because
they don’t have any fear of relatives or reference group (the group of “significant others” by whose
standards they measure themselves”.
* The sense of control over her owns life is another reason. Girls from other areas are trapped first by
their so called boyfriends and that relation after ending over premarital sex turned into a long story of
sorrow and grief.
* Economic reasons are playing an important role in rapidly changing patterns among prostitutes.
* Media is important factor of the emerging phenomenon of sex workers.
* There are many situations in which a girl becomes a prostitute or sex worker. Some girls are kidnapped
by the pimps and they bring them to this profession by leaving them at various areas because their
network is very strong and wide spread.
* Family is considered as a main factor, as the Girls belonging to relevant families also join that field.
* Financial background is also one of main factor which leads a girl to prostitution.
* International prostitutes are getting positive response in country like Pakistan which is also very
harmful for society.
* It may be because of personal choice.
* Divorce or separation is also a factor, which force a woman to involve in such activities to survive.
