Pitfalls of Current Voting System

 Governed by Corruption, Injustice & Lack of Fairplay

 Democratic Principles becoming unprotected

 Election Integrity can’t be established

 Demoting faith from Citizens

 All these problems have raised the demand for a new

accurate, secured & reliable form of Voting System
Proposed Solution
 Biometric Voting System is a very secured & reliable form of
voting System.

 It uses Biometrics for Voter Registration & Authentication.

 Biometric is the term given to the use of biological traits or

behavioural characteristics to identify an individual.

 If this system is employed, the election would be fair and

free from rigging.

 It will reduce mistrust and irregularities.

Different Biological Traits
Different Biological Traits may be :

 Fingerprints

 Hand Geometry

 Facial Geometry

 Iris & Retina Patterns

 Voice Recognition

 Handwriting Recognition

Scanning & Processing: Fingerprint

 Fingerprint Scanner scans the

Thumb Impression

 It captures a digital image or Live

Scan

 The Live Scan is digitally processed

to create a biometric template

 The Template contains a collection

of extracted features (Ex: Minutiae)
Scanning & Processing:
Iris

 A camera scans the person's eye

and produces a digital image
 Software then isolates the iris by
drawing two circles, one at inner
boundary & the other at outer
boundary
 Polar Coordinates are then added
to the image to define separate
zones of analysis
 Pattern of light & dark areas in the
iris is converted to template using
bandpass filters
Scanning & Processing:
Voice

 System requires user to speak

exact words or phrases
 Vocal tract shape, pitch, accent,
quickness, pronunciation etc.
influences in uniqueness of voice
 Voice Signal is then digitised into
Spectrogram
 This Spectrogram serves as
Voiceprint that is unique for every
person
Transfer of Processed Data to Hard
Disk

 The data which is processed (Template / Voiceprint) is

transferred to Hard Disk for searching process

 The Template / Voiceprint transferred to Hard Disk is

compared with that of database

 Within the database, template / voiceprint is usually

matched to a reference number, or PIN number which is
then matched to a person's name or account.

Formation of The Network

 The voting machines present in a town are interlinked in the

form of a highly secure LAN

 This network is formed with the help of the Telephone lines

 All the data collected in the voting system is first stored in

the voting machine itself

 Then it is sent to the HOST which will be located at the

Headquarters of the town

 All the data is collected there and it is transferred to the

main HOST
Formation of The Network
in a Town
Advantage
 Increased Security – Provide a convenient and low-cost
additional tier of security

 Reduce fraud by employing hard-to-forge technologies and

materials

 Eliminate problems caused by lost IDs or forgotten

passwords by using physiological attributes

 Prevent unauthorised use of lost, stolen or "borrowed" ID

cards

 Offer significant cost savings in long run

 Greater Accuracy, Faster Tabulation of Result

 Make it possible, automatically, to know WHO did WHAT,

WHERE and WHEN!
Disadvantage
 Expensive security solution

 Suffers from False Reject & False Accept Anomaly

 Suffers from Spoofing, specially relevant for behavioural

properties

 Fail Safety of Biometric Infrastructure

 Must be able to accommodate changes to the biometric

over time

 Effectiveness of sample collection process influenced by

environmental conditions, user training & usability

 Harder to deploy in rural areas

 Has the potential to create socio-economic divides

Conclusion

 Advent of this system would enable hosting of fair

elections in India.

 Will preclude illegal practices like rigging

 The citizens can be sure that they alone can choose their
leaders, thus exercising their right in the democracy

 Biometric approaches should be extremely carefully

deployed
