When William was eighteen years old, he married Anne Hathaway in Stratford but didn't want to stay there, wanting to be an actor in London where the best theaters were located. In 1587, William went to London to work as an actor in The Rose theatre. When James I became king in 1603, Shakespeare worked for him and performed plays for the king and his friends at the Globe theatre, which burned down after a gun caused a fire in one play. Shakespeare returned to Stratford in 1610 but died there that same year at the age of forty-six.
