Q1) The Simple harmonic oscillations of a mass (m) of 0.50 kg connected to a spring of spring-constant (k)
200 N/m is given by –

𝑥 = 𝐴 𝐶𝑜𝑠(𝜔𝑡 + 𝜑)
The initial displacement is 0.015 m and initial velocity is 0.40 m/sec.

a) Find A and 𝜑 for the above motion.

b) Find the time dependence of velocity.

Q2) A piston closes a cylinder containing gas. If B is the bulk modulus of elasticity of the gas, V is the
volume of the gas and A is the cross sectional area of the piston, then find the frequency of longitudinal
vibrations of the piston.

Q3) A liquid is kept in a U-shaped tube. If h is the equilibrium height of liquid in both arms and 2d is the
separation between the two arms of the U tube then find the equation of motion for the vertical
displacement x of the liquid surface. Also find the frequency of oscillation from the equation of motion.

Q4) A simple pendulum consists of a point mass m suspended by a massless, unstretchable string. When
the point mass is pulled to one side of its straight-down equilibrium position (this displacement is small)
and released, it executes simple harmonic motion. For a simple pendulum of length L = 1.0 m and at a
location where g =9.8 m/sec2, find the period of oscillation.

Q5) If a uniform rod of length L and mass M is pivoted at one end, find the expression for period (T) of its
motion (for small displacements as above) as a physical pendulum. What is the value of T when L is 1.0 m
and g = 9.80 m/sec2.
