Born on January 5, 1934, Dr. Murali Manohar Joshi, began his political career at a very young age.
‘Heprogressed to be a seasoned politician, and enteredthe Parliament for the first time in 1977, where over
the next few decades, he contributed immensely towards good governance through the various coveted
positions he assumed. As an erstwhile Minister of Human Resource Development, Science and Technology
and Ocean Development, Dr. Joshi specifically brought in reforms which added strength and power to these
demesnes. A teacher at heart, he was a Professor of Physics in the University of Allahabad, where he guided a
dozen doctoral students, and producedmore than 140 research papers, published in various International and
National Scientific Journals. Dr Joshi was conferred upon D. Sc. (Honoris Causa) by five Universities,
‘Mahamahopadhyay and Vidya Vachaspati from Tirupati Samskrit Vidyapeetha and Vidya Vachaspati by
Sampurnanand Samskrit Vishwavidyalaya. Dr. Joshi was bestowed upon the title of “Best Parliamentarian in
Lok Sabha"; conferred upon Russia's highest civilian award "Order of Friendship" and also the most
prestigious Padma Vibhushan Award by Govt of India. Dr. Joshi is an elected Fellow of Russian Academy of
‘Natural Sciences and an external Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India.
Dr. Joshi was also conferred Jawahar Lal Nehru Award by the Indian Science Congress in 1999 and also the
award for life time services to science. An orator par excellence, a great advocate of sublime Indian values and
ancient scientific knowledge and a protagonist of holistic view of science and philosophy, Dr Joshi was
invited to various international platforms like European Hindu Conference, World Hindu Conference,
International Seminar on Science and Religion at places like Frankfurt, Durban and Chicago where his
oratory and articulation brought in loads of appreciation and attracted a great fan following, His laudable
speech at Commonwealth Science Council at Limpopoin 2002 is still reminisced and its current Chairman,
Dr. Ben Ngubaance continues to consider it as historic and most “paradigmatic and a landmark” vision for
sustainable development in South Asia, His political eminence was well reflected by his being the leader of
various delegations to UNO, G7 and other global platforms. He continues to be a great inspiration for all in
both the arenas ofpolitics and science.
Padma Bhushan Dr. Manju Sharma

Dr. Manju Sharma is a renowned Plant Scientist whose primary research revolved around taxonomic and
phylogenetic significance of sclereids. Her Post-doctoral research at Purdue University, USA, on latex bearing
plants, found direct commercial application in rubber plantations in Malaysia. Hertenure as Secretary, DBT
is a great chapter in progression in the arena of Biotechnology and Biodiversity in India. Dr. Manju Sharma
has left an indelible mark as an outstanding researcher, science promoter and manager and demonstrated her
excellent professional skills in various positions she occupied, both nationally and internationally. She has
dedicated over the last 30 years, all her efforts for the promotion and application of science with the deepest
commitment; majorly for Women Scientists, Defence Personnel and for ST population in different regions of
the country. Her concept of Bio-villages and Biotechnological Parks boosted both scientific entrepreneurship
and rural economy. Presently Dr. Manju Sharma is an Advisor for New Initiatives in NASI and a special
invitee to NASI Council spearheading initiatives which relate to the national missions such as Skill
Development, Swachch Bharat, Swasth Bharat, Make in India and Startups. She chairs the Inter Academy
Panel for women scientists set up by the three academies of the country and is coordinating major welfare
programs for women scientists started by the DST. In partnership with CSIR labs, Dr. Manju is relentessly
working towards curtailment of malnutrition in kids.
She is the Principal Adviser on Biotechnology to the State Government of Gujarat and Uttarakhand, Fellow
ofall three science academies, she served as a General Secretary, Vice President, and later as President of ‘The
National Academy of Sciences. Her vocal advisory role to the administrative framework, over the decades,
has been remarkable. She is the recipient of NASI's Platinum Jubilee Gold Medal National Senior Women.
Bioscientist Award and Archna Sharma Gold medal and a life time achievement award from
BIOSPECTRUM. She has been conferred upon the prestigious Padma Bhushan by Government of India in
2007, DSc by Purdue University and became a “Distinguished Alumnus” of Jamia Hamdard through
conferment of Honoris Causain2018.Dr. Chandrima Shaha
Professor of Eminence at NII, President-Elect, INSA
Dr. Chandrima Shaha’s primary interest in research focuses on death processes in rapidly proliferating
cells. Her group's interest lies in elucidation of the regulatory processes of cell death and the associated
mechanisms and its ramifications. An alumnus of University of Calcutta, she earned her postdoctorate
from Kansas University Medical Centre, Kansas, USA. She is_ the former Director of the National
Institute of mmunology, New Delhiwhere she is currently the Professor of Eminence. She isan elected
fellowofthe World Academy of Sciences and fellow ofall three Academies in India.
She is currently the President - Elect of the Indian National Science Academy, a great career feat. She
has servedaas the Vice-President of International Affairs of the Indian National Science Academy and as
amemberin the Councils ofall three Academies.
Notable awards include, the Ranbaxy Science Foundation Award; the J. C. Bose Fellowship; the
Shanti-Swarup Bhatnagar Medal of Indian National Science Academy; Om Prakash Bhasin Award;
Archana Sharma Memorial Award; Darshan Ranganathan Memorial Award; Chandrakala Hora
Memorial Medal and the Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize. She, is indeed an epitome of leadership in
Science and is poised to scale newer heights as the President -elect of Indian National Science
Academy.
Prof. (Dr.)Gagandeep Kang
Fellow ofthe Royal Society, Director, THSTI
Dr. Gagandeep Kang isa pioneering clinician and biologist with her core research specialisation being
in the field of viral contamination and deterrents in children, and the testing of rotaviral vaccines. She
playedapivotal role in devising and developing an avant-garde vaccine to equip India against Rotavirus.
Her research was immensely socially relevant and consequential on a ground-and-masses-scale. Her
pragmatically-contextual biological insights have helped save millions of children till date. Her workhas
helped frame crucial Health, and Women and Child departments’ policymaking, and instrumentally
influenced legislations to accommodate for unforeseen factors, particularly amongst the rural
underprivileged.
She chairs the Immunization Technical Advisory Group forthe WHO's South East Asian Region andis
an Independent Director of the Hilleman Laboratories, a partnership established to make affordable
vaccines by Merck and the Wellcome Trust.
She has garnered numerous distinguished accolades in her vast repertoire including the Woman
Bioscientist of the Year, Ranbaxy Research Award, and Infosys Prize in Life Sciences. She is a fellow of
all three Science academies She is also the first Indian and the first ever woman to edit the Manson's
‘Textbook of Tropical Medicine.
Dr. Kang, is the incumbent Executive-Director of the Translational Health Science and Technology,
Institute (THSTI) Faridabad. She is the first-ever Indian woman to have earned the most-coveted
laurel, designation and distinction in academia, having the fellowship of the Royal Society, conferred
