Question 1.
Without sketching graphs, describe how the graphs of the functions g and h can be obtained from that
of y = f (x) in each of the cases below.

a) (i) g(x) = f (x) − 4 (ii) h(x) = f (x − 4)

b) (i) g(x) = f (−x) + 1 (ii) h(x) = −f (x + 1)

c) (i) g(x) = f (x − 5) + 2 (ii) h(x) = 5f (x + 2)

d) (i) g(x) = 21 f (x) + 6 (ii) h(x) = 21 f (x − 6).

Question 2.
For each of the following, sketch the graph of g using the graph of the function f .

a) g(x) = 3 − (x + 2)2 f (x) = x2

b) g(x) = |x − 2| + 1 f (x) = |x|

c) g(x) = |x2 − 3| f (x) = x2

Question 3.
A function f (x) is given. Express each of the following functions in terms of f (x):

a) g(x), where the graph of g(x) is the graph of f (x) shifted three units upwards.

b) h(x), where the graph of h(x) is the graph of f (x) reflected in the x−axis.

c) p(x), where the graph of p(x) is the graph of f (x) shifted eight units to the left.

d) r(x), where the graph of r(x) is the graph of f (x) reflected in the x−axis and then shifted one unit
downwards.

Question 4.

Let f (x) = − x − 2.

a) Determine the domain of f .

b) Clearly describe how the graph of f can be obtained from that of y = x.

c) Sketch the graph of f .
