Huawei launches new operating system 'HarmonyOS'

In wake of the US-China trade war, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei on Friday officially
launched its own operating system (OS) called "HarmonyOS" which is aimed to reduce the company's
reliance on Google-developed Android OS.
Beijing, In wake of the US-China trade war, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei on Friday
officially launched its own operating system (OS) called "HarmonyOS" which is aimed to reduce the
company's reliance on Google-developed Android OS.

The CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu, announced the new OS just as Huawei
Developer Conference (HDC) 2019 is about to begin in Dongguan, China.

Focused on improved cross-platform working, HarmonyOS would work across a wide range of
devices including smart speakers, automobiles, computers, smartwatches, wireless earbuds apart
from smartphones and tablets, web portal Phone Areana reported on Friday.

In China, the software will be known as HongmengOS.

Even though the company has launched its own OS, Huawei still plans to continue to harness Android
in its smartphones.

The first-ever Huawei smartphone to run the new HarmonyOS is slated to be showcased on August
10 at the three-day HDC 2019 event.

Ever since Google suspended the Huawei's Android license back in May, following the US
government's decision to put Huawei on the Entity List, there had been a lot of speculation about
Huawei's in-house OS.

In the thick of trade tensions between the US and China, earlier in May it was reported that to avoid
hacking risks, Chinese officials have decided to develop a custom OS for PCs that would replace
Microsoft Windows which is currently used by the Chinese military.

THE RISING TREND OF ROBOTS AS A SERVICE:

The concept of robots as a service (RaaS) is gaining popularity. ABI Research estimates that the
installed base for RaaS will grow from 4,442 units in 2016 to 1.3 million in 2026, generating $34 billion
in revenue.

Many are familiar with the concept of infrastructure as a service (IaaS) or software as a service
(SaaS). Similarly, RaaS providers offer robots as a service to an organisation for managing repetitive
and mundane and dangerous tasks.

The biggest advantage of RaaS is that organisations can access services through a cloud-based
subscription. This means they can now shift their capital expenditure (CAPEX) to an operational
expenditure (OPEX), which allows them to deploy solutions without making huge advance payments.

Mostly, robots are deployed to perform repetitive and mundane tasks which are typically done by
humans working on lower pay. Since deploying robots could be quite expensive, companies face
difficulties in getting a return on investment.
RaaS can be used in where SOA, cloud computing, IoT, CPS, and ADS are used. One the application
in computer science education. RaaS uses existing services to compose different applications at
workflow level, which significantly reduce the learning curve of robotics programming.

AI will refine auto constructing and tuning of models

Since Google’s launch of AutoML last year, the use of AI tools to accelerate the process of
constructing and tuning models is rapidly gaining popularity. A new approach to AI development was
revealed, automating the design of machine learning models. It showed the ability to construct models
without the human input with one AI becoming the architect of another.
This year, experts expect the growth of the popularity of commercial AutoML packages and the
integration of AutoML into large machine learning platforms.
After AutoML, a computer vision algorithm called NASNet was built that is able to recognize objects in
video streams in real time. The “reinforcement learning” on NASNet was implemented with AutoML
showing not only the ability to train the model without humans but even better results in comparison
with algorithms with human input.
These developments significantly broaden the horizons for machine learning and will completely
reshape the approach to models construction in the next years.

Augmented reality is shaping the future of car retail

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology which overlays information and objects on real-world
physical environments. Car manufacturer Audi was one of the first brands to improve the physical
showroom and created the world’s first digital showroom--Audi City--using AR. Customers can
customize their own car model and choose from hundred million possible configurations from across
the entire model range. BMW is another brand aiming to transform the car buying experience with its
BMW i Visualiser. The AR solution helps BMW sell cars, enthuse new tech-savvy customer groups,
and bring dealerships to customers digitally. Jaguar Land Rover is among the car brands which lets
its customers virtually test-drive its new car Velar. When consumers click an AR-enabled banner ad
campaign, they can experience a 360º view of the car’s interior. It is said that the experience gave a
feeling of actually being present in the car. The AR system also included hotspots which consumers
can tap to see more details on car features.
This new approach is changing the way car buyers choose, configure, and make purchasing
decisions, allowing them to view and interact with a full-scale virtual version of the car through an app.
AR can also be used by users to scan any car on the road to find info about its price and the nearest
dealership. Financial services company USAA is using this to enhance the car purchasing process.
