I had a teacher who used to teach tunes by using the following routine. Great way to approach
practicing like this: 1st chorus: Play melody. 2nd: Arpeggios 8th notes. (1 chord/bar) 1357, 9753. (2
chords/bar) 1357, 1357. 3rd: Scales 8th notes: (1 chord/bar) 12345678. (2 chords/bar) 1235. (12-35,
or 1-345) 4th: Solo 5th: Play melody out. If you apply this to a rhythm section instrument, you can
throw in one chorus of your appropriate rhythm section function as well: comp, baseline, etc. You
can also expand on this concept by doing a ii-V lick instead of arpeggios, or starting the arpeggios
and scales at the top of the chord and descending. Sticking to this routine is harder than it appears.
Good luck.
