MAN AND THE
INVERTED TREE OF LIFE

‘From the Inner Tradition, man spiritually is
an Inverted Tree of Life,’ What is the
meaning of this~ The Crown Center is the
entry point of the divine energy. It is through
the crown that one is spiritually rooted
upward to the higher soul and ultimately to
God, This spiritual root or spiritual cord is
called sutra atma in Sanskrjt, It comes from
two words:
Sutra which means “thread,” and atma which
means the”self’ or the “soul,”
In ordinary people the spiritual root is as
thin as a hair strand, As a person practices
and masters the virtues or develops strong
inner character, the spiritual root becomes
thicker, By meditating or praying regularly
the spiritual root becomes bigger. Man is
truly a spiritual inverted tree, with the higher
soul and the divine spark as the source of the
spiritual root.

When a person has a strong spiritual
connection with his higher soul, the person is
whole or has integrity. This manifests as
wholesomeness, To be more accurate and
correct, it is not a matter of whether a person
is connected with the higher soul or not, but
the degree of connection, Some people are
internally weak, and have very thin spiritual
cords, The spiritual root of people who are
more spiritually developed can be seen as a
pillar of light. Just as the
physical root absorbs physical nutrients, the
spiritual root draws in spiritual nutrient, In
Christian terminology, the drawing in the
spiritual nutrient is called the “descent of the
Holy Spirit” or “spiritual energy.”

In Chinese, spiritual energy is called Tian chi,
Tian, in its deeper meaning, means “god.” Chi
means “energy.” Tian chi, therefore, means
“God’s energy” or “divine energy”. It has been
mistranslated as “cosmic energy.”

LORD KRISHNA AND THE
INVERTED TREE OF LIFE
Lord Krishna gave a spiritual discourse to
Arjuna before the Great War in chapter
15 of the Bhagavad-Gita (as translated by
Barbara Stoler Miller). Under section “The
True Spirit of Man,” Lord Krishna says to
Arjuna;
Roots in the air, branches below,
The tree of l!fe is unchanging
Its form is unknown
Here in the world
Unknown are its end,
Its beginning, its extent,,,
Then search to find
The realm
That one enters
Without returning
I seek refuge
In the original spirit of man,
From which primordial
Activity extended,
Lord Krishna taught Arjuna that man
—the soul is the Inverted Tree of Life with
roots in the air, “Roots in the air”, as stated
earlier is the sutra atma or the
spiritual root. “Without returning I seek
reftige in the original spirit of man,” refers
to achieving union or yoga with the divine
spark or Paramatma. This is one of the most
profound teachings of Lord Krishna which
has been a puzzle to most swamis and
readers for thousands of years.

THE UPANISHADS AND THE
TREE OF ETERNITY
The Tree of Life as mentioned by the
great Avatar Krishna in the BhagavidGita is
called the Tree of Eternity in The
Upanishads, in a translation by Eknath
Easwaran:
The Tree of Eternity has its roots above And
its branches on earth below, Its pure root is
Brahman (Supreme God) the immortal
From whom all the world draw their life,
and whom
None can transcend, For this Self (I AM) is
supreme!
The cosmos comes forth from Brahman and
moves
In Him, With his power it reverberates, Like
thunder crashing in the sky. Those who
realize (H)im
Pass beyond the sway of death
If one fails to realize Brahman in this life
Before the physical sheath (body) is shed,
He must again put on a body
In the world of embodied creatures.
