Introduction
Environmental indicators are parameters used to evaluate the state of a complex environmental
system, these serve to support the generation of knowledge, and serve as a tool in making informed
decisions through the generation of strategic information organized synthetically and produced
periodically
The objectives of the environmental indicators with respect to air are:
- Facilitate the evaluation of the environmental situation of a territory or of a specific problem.
- Provide data equivalent to each other in different regions and countries, so that they can also be
grouped to obtain global national and international data.
- Provide systematized and easy-to-understand information for non-expert public in the field related
to the environmental situation in the scope contemplated
As are the following:
- AIR QUALITY: Know the air quality index with good and admissible categories and that the
categories are bad, very bad and dangerous.
- PARTICLES PM10: Know the concentration of particles in the areas where necessary, to be able to
prepare action plans on air quality.
- PART2CULAS PM2,5: knowing the annual limit value of PM2.5 that will be signaled by the EU
will not be exceeded in the stations of the Network.
What is the importance of environmental indicators?
The importance of environmental air indicators is that they are a tool for reporting on the state of the
air, evaluating the performance of environmental policies, programs and projects. The importance of
the indicators is that it helps the main actors and decision makers to implement timely measures and
actions in environmental management at the national, regional and local levels, since they can:
- Provide information on environmental problems.
- Support the development of policies and the establishment of priorities, identifying the key factors
of pressure on the environment.
- Contribute to the follow-up of the response policies and especially the integration ones.
- To be a tool for the dissemination of information at all levels, for policy makers, experts or scientists
and the general public.
How to use environmental indicators in the professional field?
In the field of environmental engineering, indicators are important to understand, describe and
analyze different phenomena such as climate, loss of air quality and species risk, among many others,
as it serves as basic information for evaluations Periodic environmental performance, since to
establish indicators whose compression is simple and accessible for non-specialists, because each
indicator constitutes a clear expression of status and trend, generalizable to the thematic area of
reference, taking into account that the set of defined indicators is comprehensive of the environmental
reality to which it refers.
