Newton’s Laws of Motion

Sir Isaac Newton was one of the greatest influential scientists of all time. He formulated the three law of motion.

First law of Motion

It states that an object will continue to remain at rest or uniform motion unless acted by an external unbalanced
force. When an object is at rest, it will not move unless some kind of force acts on them. The law also states that
an object will stay in a state constant velocity in the absence of an unbalanced force. This means if there was no
frictional or any other force, the ball will never stop; but if a force of friction is applied then it will make the object
stop.

Second law of Motion

It states that the rate of change momentum of an object is directly proportional to the unbalanced force in the
direction of force. Force is proportional to acceleration.

Third Law of Motion

It states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. When we sit on a chair, our body exerts a
downward force on the chair. The chair also exerts an upward force on the body.

Exercise:

Answer the following:

1. ______________________ - He formulated the three laws of motion.
2. ______________________- It states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
3. ______________________- Force is proportional to acceleration.
4. ______________________- An object will continue at rest or uniform motion unless acted by an eternal
unbalanced force.
5. ______________________- Give an example of any of the laws of motion.
