SEGMENT ONE: A Proposition from the Edge

Silence speaks to those who listen.

In the depths of a static screen, a face pressed up against the fibers of nowhere, screaming and
scraping at the hopefulness of something other than the constant bars of its digital prison. I had
seen this face many times before, often in passing, but with the simple nod of my head, the face
would always return to its milky sea of grit. And I would forget, just as history forgets those who
wait, or as time marches on over an all-too-soon elderly child. But surely, and consistently, his
face would return. It would take on other forms – maybe a reflection in the puddle, or a cloud of
dust in the wind – but it was always the same face.

I came to stop seeing faces after I grew up a little and my imaginary friends decided to manifest
into an omniscient “voice” within my head. The whims of mystery were long forgotten. The
concept of an undiscovered entity, or of a potentially “hidden power,” was no longer plausible,
and thus my creative spirit died in the cold abyss of my suddenly matured thoughts. School.
Work. Money. Life became a slate of grainy absolutes. It took me until well into my twenties to
