1. This book is devoted to the understanding of leadership
concept and practice in military situations. The latest thinking on leadership is that is a human behavior which can be developed. It gives a positive direction to the use of human resources and brings out the best in a man.
2. All human activities require primarily two things for their
successful completion: will and skill. The leaders of an organisation require these qualities in greater measure than their men, because they have to tackle more complex and difficult problems. Both these qualities of human behaviour are attainable through training.
3. The study of the history reveals that though the practice of
leadership has been in vogue since the origin of man, yet the terms used for describing it have been different. In the earlier days the terms used for describing a leader wear king, chief, head, captain etc. Similarly, in the earlier days the practice of leadership was called kingship, chiefship, headship etc.
4. The middle of nineteenth century when Europe produced
a number of adventurers, explorers, captains of the navy and military commanders, the use of term leadership had become quite popular and acquired a distinct meaning. But for a long term thereafter also the concept of leadership remained person-oriented and was understood more in terms of the leader’s background and his in-born personal qualities than what could be acquired by him through and development.
