Dear Mr Malcom,

I met with Ian and Richard last week to talk about the issues of littering and general mess in
the Kings Cross area. I thought I should send you an email as I understand you are the Kings
Cross officer.

Firstly, I strongly suspect that the Veolia employees themselves are doing a shoddy job in
this area of street cleaning and bin emptying. I have observed nearby areas and the street
cleaners do a far better job. A great deal of litter built up recently because one employee
went on holiday and nobody covered him - that is not acceptable. I have contacted Veolia
directly, but perhaps you can help investigate this.
Whenever the streets are cleaned, and I observe this occasionally, they are not cleaned to a
good enough standard. That is one thing that can easily be addressed.

Secondly (and more importantly) we talked about how to bring long term improvements to
the area, to deter littering and ASB etc. I wonder if you can be of help regarding this? I
would like to contact the parks team regarding adoption of tree pits etc but I cannot find a
contact - perhaps you know someone who could help. We also talked of sources of funding
to help towards this sort of thing. I am wondering if you are acquainted with the Heritage
Fund? We are lucky that most of Kings Cross is a conservation area. If we can get together
some sort of a project, involving the community and respecting and enhancing the historic
fabric of the area, I'm sure the Heritage Fund can take a look at it.

Best regards,
Owen Ward
