EQUALLS2: Education Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills 2

A USAID-ELSA-PBSP Project

Sample Lesson on Differentiated Instruction

Subject Area: English (Verbs: Progressive Forms – Using Gerunds)
Grade/Year Level: Grade 6/1st year High School
Rationale: When pupils enjoy the opportunity to choose what activity to undertake depending on their
learning style, they feel the ownership of the activity thus become interested in learning.
In this lesson the learning style preferences and learning contract will allow students to work at
appropriate pace and develop independence in a variety of work settings to demonstrate their
understanding of the progressive forms of verbs (or using gerunds).
DI Strategy: Learning Centers and Learning Contract
Differentiate What? Process and Product
Differentiate How? Learning Profile (Learning Style Preference)
Resources Needed:
 Cassette/CD Player
 Music (MP3 or tape) of the song GLOWING INSIDE by Nikki Gil
 Adhesives
 Cartolina (for the learning centers instructions)
Learning Activity:

Motivation: Action Song

Linking Statement: Words that end with –ing are called gerunds and they are used to express the progressive
form of verbs.
Pre-activity for Learning Centers: Distribute copies of the handout on Progressive form of Verbs (see Appendix
A). Give time for students to read. They are to refer to this handout as they complete tasks in their Learning
Centers. Ask them to go to their Learning Center according to their Learning Style Preference. In their Learning
Center, they are to find a partner before completing the task.

Learning Center I: Visual Learners

Pupils will pretend to be news reporters. Their task, in pairs, is to observe what is happening around
the classroom/outside the class (optional: during recess time) and observe what the students are
doing. They are to write down sentences about their observations using progressive verbs or gerunds
(verb + ing). From these sentences, they are to form a news report. They shall underline all gerunds
used. The task instruction to be posted on the learning center is shown below (the context of
observation may be changed, depending on the need).
VISUAL LEARNERS:
You and your partner are news reporters and you are to write a news report about what is happening in your
classroom. With your partner, observe the actions of the persons inside your room and write down sentences about
them using PROGRESSIVE VERBS. Next, develop a paragraph with AT LEAST 15 sentences that will serve as your
news report script. Do not forget to mention the date (WHEN), time (WHEN), place (WHERE), people (WHO), and
the event itself (WHAT and HOW). Be consistent in your use of time format or tense (present, past, future, present
perfect, past perfect, or future perfect). Make sure to provide a HEADLINE (title) of your work.

Learning Center II: Auditory Learners
Pupils, in pairs, will listen to the song GLOWING INSIDE by Nikki Gil (See Appendix C for lyrics). Their
task is to list down the gerunds used in the song and the number of times they were mentioned. After
that, they are to complete the poem (see Appendix B) using these gerunds. The task instruction to be
posted on the learning center is shown below (the context of observation may be changed, depending
on the need).

AUDITORY LEARNERS:
You and your partner are song writers. Your task is to listen to a song and listen for
PROGRESSIVE VERBS mentioned in the song. Jot down these gerunds. After that, complete
the poem (see Appendix B) using the progressive verbs or gerunds you heard from the song.
Be consistent in your use of time format or tense (present, past, future, present perfect, past
perfect, or future perfect). Assign a familiar tune to your poem to make it a song.

GLOWING INSIDE LYRICS

I thank you for the glow
Happy, to let you know And thank you for the joy
You make me glow Thank you for the love you give to me
I feel so good, it's true I'm always glowing inside
So glad that I have you With your love shining through
You love me so, Now all is bright Thank you for everything you do
I'm glowing inside because of you
I'll always thank you for the glow
And thank you for the joy Who knows of what tomorrow brings
Thank you for the love you give to me My glowing wings can make me fly
I'm glowing, glowing inside I'll reach and now I touch the sky
With your love shining through Because of you I'll sore up high, So I must
Thank you for everything you do
I'm glowing inside because of you Thank you for the glow
And thank you for the joy
Remember, my growing years Thank you for the love you give to me
They're filled with joy I'm glowing, glowing inside
Because you're there for me With your love shining through
You cast my fears away Thank you for everything you do
You wipe those tears I'm glowing inside because of you
You gave me strength each day

Learning Center III: Kinesthetic Learners

Pupils, in pairs, will recall what they experienced the previous day. Their task is to list down the verbs in
gerund form (in chronological order) which they did the previous day starting from the moment they
woke up until they slept. Then, they shall develop a story out of the gerunds they listed. The task
instruction to be posted on the learning center is shown below (the context of observation may be
changed, depending on the need).

KINESTHETIC LEARNERS:
You and your partner are story authors. With your partner, your task is to list down all the
things you did yesterday starting from the moment you woke up until you slept using the
PROGRESSIVE VERBS. Then, create a story using the progressive verbs you listed down. Make
sure to have an introduction and an ending. Be consistent in your use of time format or
tense (present, past, future, present perfect, past perfect, or future perfect). Provide a title
for your story.

Learning Contract: In this part of the activity, the pupils are instructed to choose either to complete all the
required tasks in the learning centers or to choose only which learning center(s) to visit. They are also
asked to fill-out a learning contract found below:

APPENDIX A
PROGRESSIVE VERB FORMS

Read the sentences below:

Ronnie’s parents are living in Barrio Pag-asa.

Many families, like Ronnie’s, are looking forward to owning houses of their own.

Notice that the underlined words or verbs express on-going actions. These verbs are special forms called the progressive
forms.
The progressive forms of a verb are used to express on-going actions.
There are six progressive forms of the verb. They are constructed by combining the simple and perfect tenses of be with
the present participle of the verb.

Example:
I am writing a letter. (present progressive)
I was writing a letter. (past progressive)
I shall be writing a letter. (future progressive)
I have been writing a letter. (present perfect progressive)
I had been writing a letter. (past perfect progressive)
I shall been writing a letter. (future perfect progressive)

1. The Present Progressive. The present progressive form is used to express an on-going action that is happening at
the present time.
Example: Soccer is becoming a popular sport in the country.

When used with an adverb or a group of words that indicates a future time, the present progressive can also
express a future action.

The flight from Cebu is arriving in one hour.

2. The Past Progressive. The past progressive form is used to express an on-going action that occurred in the past.
Example: In the early 18th century, the Chinese were already trading with the Filipinos.

3. The Future Progressive. The future progressive form is used to express an on-going action that will take place in
the future.
Example: The people will be rushing to the shop during the sale.

4. The Present Perfect Progressive. The present perfect progressive form is used to express an on-going action that
began in the past and is continuing in the present.
Example: The fate of Siamese twins has been puzzling doctors for years.

5. The Past Perfect Progressive. The past perfect progressive form is used to express an on-going past action that is
interrupted by another past action.
Example: The ancient Israelites had been wandering aimlessly in the desert before they found the Promised
Land.

6. The Future Perfect Progressive. The future perfect progressive form is used to express an on-going future action
that will have taken place by a designated future time.
Example: She will have been packing her things by the time her host arrives.
