PLAGIARISM

What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or
without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement.
Plagiarism is theft and is illegal. Although plagiarism is not a criminal or civil offense, plagiarism
is illegal if it infringes an author's intellectual property rights, including copyright or trademark.
Taking other peoples works and gaining credit for it is against the educational standards. This is
especially seen during educational projects where students go to the net and get fully done
projects and present them for grades. Plagiarism and its effects first came into the picture in the
18th century in Europe.
Plagiarism is not in itself a crime, but can constitute copyright infringement. In academia and
industry, it is a serious ethical offense.[4][5] Plagiarism and copyright infringement overlap to a
considerable extent, but they are not equivalent concepts, and many types of plagiarism do not
constitute copyright infringement, which is defined by copyright law and may be adjudicated by
courts. Plagiarism is not defined or punished by law, but rather by institutions (including
professional associations, educational institutions, and commercial entities, such as publishing
companies). Most cases of plagiarism are considered misdemeanors, punishable by fines of
anywhere between $100 and $50,000 — and up to one year in jail. Plagiarism can also be
considered a felony under certain state and federal laws. Plagiarism can get you fired from a job
or expelled from a university. You can be sued for plagiarism.
There are so many ways to avoid plagiarism; Don’t get someone else to do you your work for you,
no matter how much pressure you’re under, Educate yourself on good academic practice and on
how to reference properly. If your university provides extra modules or lectures on this, make
sure you attend, Take careful notes and reference as you go. If you think that’s happened, rather
than panic, email the lecturer. Ask for help when you need it. So go to your course tutor or the
student union if you’re struggling.
