The concert Band opens this evening’s concert with a lively and high-energy arrangement of “When

the Saints Go Marching In”. The work is titled “A Saint-sational Trio!” and is arranged in an up-tempo
Dixieland style by Michael Story. This piece features three trumpet soloists (Nicholas Auld, Iona
Kennedy and James Gifford).

“How Far I’ll Go” is a hit song from the 2016 Disney film Moana. The film tells the story of Moana,
the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a Polynesian village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to
reunite a mystical relic with a goddess. When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of
Maui, a legendary demigod, in the hope of returning the heart of Te Fiti and saving her people. The
song, by Lin-Manuel Miranda, was nominated for Best Original Song at the 89th Academy Awards and
74th Golden Globes. “How Far I’ll Go” has been arranged for concert band by American composer
and arranged Matt Conaway.

The concert band opens its programme with the fast paced “Afterburn” by Randall D. Standridge.
The piece seeks to capture the emotions of flight in a supercharged jet plane as we propel ourselves
through time to mid-16th century Germany and early 20th Century Russia, as we mark the
anniversaries of the Reformation and Russian Revolution. Standridge is an American wind band
composer and has had many of his pieces selected for the coveted and world renowned “mid-west
clinic” for wind bands.

“St. Petersburg March” is an original composition by another American wind band composer Doctor
Jonnie Vinson. With well over 400 published works, Dr. Vinson is an internationally recognised
arranger and composer of music for wind band. This march is evocative of St. Petersburg’s rich and
exciting history of intrigue, revolution and mystery. A powerful musical experience!
