We say goodbye to IDDS 2009 President, Dr. Sue
Germain, who is retiring and moving to the mountains of
North Carolina. Dr. Germain has been responsible for the
creation of the Indiana A.I.R. program, and the success of
the inaugural and second Indiana Mission of Mercy projects.
Dr. Germain has made a difference in dentistry in Indiana,
and we will all miss her. We wish her, and her husband,
Chuck, the best for their future—they certainly deserve all
the happiness life holds.

Assembly. Dr. Aneziris is a member of
the Northwest Dental Society. If only his
words could be duplicated in our daily
interactions. Here is his speech:
President Daniel Fridh, members of the
assembly and honored guest,
Welcome to the 2019 Midwest Dental
Assembly!
We have all gathered in French Lick
as colleagues and friends with attention to
a common goal. That goal is the continued
service to the citizens of our great state through
our programs, our work and advancements in
education.
Together we will be making decisions
that will affect our community and guide our
profession.
May we use our best skills, judgement
and resources to represent our membership
fairly and to wisely make adjudications and
resolutions that promote common good.
We are of diverse opinion here. May

we be open to the ideas and beliefs of our
colleagues and respectful of our differences. We
aim to mend digressions and reach agreements
satisfactory to all.
Let us keep ourselves impartial as we
consider the merits and pitfalls of each matter
that is placed before us.

common ground. May we be united and see
what is truly important to those who have
entrusted us to represent them. Help one
another to engage in meaningful discussion
that will allow us to grow closure as a group
and move forward with a shared purpose.

horizons.
Indiana Dental Association, I ask you to

Drinks Destroy Teeth Celebrates Ten Years in 2020!!!
2020 marks ten years of the IDA
educational program Drinks Destroy
Teeth. The program celebrates reaching
over 900,00 students with the important
preventive message that acid and
sugar destroy teeth. The ADA website
Mouthhealthy.org links to the Drinks
Destroy Teeth website. The ADA News
will feature the Drinks Destroy Teeth App
and the dental public health program in the
near future. Essentially, this exposure takes
the program nationwide, reaching our goal
of 163,000 dentists.

Thanks to the support of Indiana
dentists, every Indiana Component, every
honor organization, almost every specialty,
and (GSK) GlaxcoSmithKlein, this project
now uses lessons and fun games to reach
youthful consumers. With the website
lesson plans, the educational sheets are
free to teachers, nurses, physicians and
dentists. This free App also reaches the
growing number of school age children
whose schools are adopting tablet based
curriculums, reaching over 50% of schools.
Dentists and physicians agree the sugar
in soft drinks, sports drinks and energy
drinks are detrimental to health. Obesity
and tooth decay are linked to the great
amount of sugar in the drinks, as well as to
the alarming increase in serving sizes.
Service Men and Women
Recently, with interested IUSD dental
students, we presented the program at
the Roudebush VA to veterans, staff and
residents. Men and women who are serving
abroad are returning with significant
decay. They are under stress, which reduces
salivary flow, on patrol with little time for
hygiene and limited water. Once back at
base, they have unlimited soft drinks, sports
drinks, and energy drinks when they relax
at the mess tent. These factors contribute to
decay, and need to be addressed responsibly
by dentists without blame or shame.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
After 25 years of practicing orthodontics in the Indianapolis
area, I am announcing my retirement effective September 30,
2019. It is time for me to move into another chapter of my life.
My career in orthodontics has truly been a dream come true.
I have met so many talented and amazing doctors along the way.
My mentors have always been there for me as I strived to be the
best orthodontist that I could be. The supporting teams around me
provided encouragement and made it fun to come to work (most
of the time!).
I am humbled to have had the opportunity to change patients’
lives through my profession. Creating great smiles has given
many patients the confidence they need to be more successful.
I know the thing I will most miss is the interactions I had with
patients and families to help make their day special.
Retirement will be yet another adventure to discover. I pray
that I will be able to live a meaningful and productive life through
quality time with family, volunteer work, and travel.
