Maison Perrier-Jouët:

A House with a difference,

M
aison Perrier-Jouët was founded in
Epernay in 1811 by Pierre-Nicolas
Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët,
a newly married couple united
by a love of nature, a passion for
champagne and a bold, entrepreneurial vision. She was a
cultured, spirited young woman from a family of Normandy
merchants; he a keen botanist and knowledgeable vintner
with clear ideas on how to produce champagne. Free-
spirited and independent-minded, they were determined
that Maison Perrier-Jouët would, from the start, be a House
with a difference, defined by audacious decisions in the
pursuit of quality. In particular, they chose the Chardonnay
grape – a white variety little used at the time – as the
Perrier-Jouët signature, initiating the intricate floral style
which instantly sets its champagnes apart.

in revealing the true essence of Chardonnay. When the
present cellar master Hervé Deschamps was appointed
in 1993, he received from his predecessor not only the key
to the celebrated Eden cellar, where the rarest vintages
are kept, but also the cellar books containing the notes
and observations of the House’s past cellar masters – a
precious testament to a long tradition of savoir-faire. On his
retirement, Hervé Deschamps will, in his turn, transmit this
