Answer any 4 questions including question number 1 which is compulsory

Q1 [1]x5
a. How is a fuzzy set different from a crisp set?

b. Consider the following fuzzy statement:

‘Marks is mathematics is nearly 40’
Select the Universe and suggest a logical membership function (analytical
expression) with a sketch.

c. What do you mean normality and convexity of a fuzzy set?

d. Consider the following fuzzy sets on the same Universe of discourse

A=0.1/1+0.2/2+0.3/3 and B=0.5/1+0.6/2+0.1/3

Apply fuzzy set theory to find out:

(i) A union B
(ii) A intersection B

e. What do you mean by optimization?

Q2a. Explain the fuzzy extension principle. [2]

b. Consider the following fuzzy set based on Universe X: [3]
A=0.1/1+0.2/2+0.6/6+0.3/(-1)+0.2/(-2)+0.5/(-6)

Assemble the fuzzy set B if it is based on Universe Y such that y=x2-4

Q3. Given the outside temperature as universe T in Farhenheit={70, 80, 90,100} [5]
Given the speed of fan in 1000 rpm as Universe={1,2,3,4}

Consider the given fuzzy sets:

H= ‘Outside temperature is hot’={(70,0.4), (80,0.6), (90,0.8), (100,0.9)}
F= ‘Speed of fan is fast’={(1,0.3), (2,0.5),(3,0.7),(4,0.9)}

The following rule is given:

Rule 1: If Temperature is Hot, Then Fan should run Fast.

Justify and infer the output fuzzy set if it is given that outside temperature is
very hot.

Q4. Derive the inference for the following cases: [5]

Assumption: x,y,and z belong to different universe of discourse X,Y and Z. Fuzzy

sets A,A’,A1,A2, B, B’,B1,B2,C1,C2 are defined on the universe of discourse as
evident from facts and rules of different cases given below:

Case 1:

Premise 2(rule 1):if x is A, then y is B

Case 2:
Premise 1(fact): if x is A’ and y is B’
Premise 2(rule 1): if x is A and y is B, then z is C

Case 3:
Premise 1(fact): if x is A’
Premise 2(rule 1): if x is A1, then y is B1
Premise 3(rule 2): if x is A2, then y is B2

Q5. Assume that the output of a certain fuzzy system using the Mamdani approach is [5]
the following fuzzy set:

defuzzified crisp value:

(1) Centroid of area method.

(2) Bisector of area
