In the following, “language sample” may be a word, a phrose, a sentence, or a text. Task Type Task SORTING ‘Ss look for a way to put language samples given into ‘groups. The criterion may or may not be provided. CLASSIFYING Ss group language samples given into categories. An example may or may not be given. IDENTIFYING ‘Ss look for instances of a special feature in a language sample (text; sentences) JUDGING 5s judge whether the language samples given (phrase/sentence) or a generalisation is/are acceptable. JUDGING AND Ss judge and then explain why something is OK or not EXPLAINING 0K. JUDGING AND RELATING | Ss judge whether the language samples exemplify a certain concept EXPLAINING LANGUAGE. | Ss explain the problem in the language samples given. PROBLEMS RESEARCHING Ss look up a language sample in a dictionary, a reference book, or on the Internet ‘COMPARING Compare a few groups of language samples to find out (a) how the groups differ, (b) what the members of each group have in common, or (c) how the members of a group differ. ‘SEQUENCING Ss arrange the language samples given according toa certain criterion GRAPHIC PRESENTATION | Ss present a language feature/generalization/etc. in diagrams, tables, charts, ete. COMMENTING ‘Ss comment on the validity of a grammar generalization/rule MATCHING ‘Ss match items in one list to items in another list IDENTIFYING $s look for instances in a group of given language samples that conform to a certain concept/criterion ELABORATING ‘Ss expand the context for a language sample to make the meaning clearer. CONTEXTUALISNG ‘$s look for a context in which a language feature may be found. IMPROVING. ‘Ss improve a language sample (e.g,, a text) to make it more appropriate LOOKING FOR Ss look for similarities in a set of language samples. SIMILARITIES COMPARING AND Ss compare language samples and decide which on JUDGING better. STUDYING AND Ss study a feature in a language sample and explain EXPLAINING why itis so. COMPLETION Ss complete a sentence/dialogue/text with language items given to make it sound appropriate SUBSTITUTING Substitute a language sample with another example to show understanding
