Be aware of this when choosing installation location, The following are to be avoided in choosing a location for the receiver: 1, Direct sunshine or the immediate vicinity of sources of heat. 2. Insufficient ventilation. The air circulation vents on the top and rear of the receiver should not be blocked. 3. Moisture or dust Front Panel Facilities I. Re : [1 Power Switch On/Off (Power) ‘The power switch button turns AC power to the receiver on and off, When the power cord is plugged into an AC outlet, power will be turned on by pressing the button ones. Pressing the button a second time will turn power off. Button released ~ Power off Button depressed — Power on (2) Headphone Jack (Phones) Stereo headphones may be connected here when you want to hear @ program without disturbing other people (or being disturbed by other people). When headphones are being used, no sound comes from the loudspeakers. (3) + @] Tone Controls {3 Bass Tone Control (Bass) Clockwise rotation increases bass response. Likewise, counterclockwise rotation reduces bbass response, In the center position (value 0}, bass response is linear and tone is passed on without boost or reduction. [@) Treble Tone Control (Treble) Clockwise rotation increases and counter- clockwise rotation reduces trable response. In the center position (value 0), high-range ‘The following additional points should be noted for the turntable: 1, Mounting surface should be horizontal 2. The structure on which the turntable is placed should be secure against disturbance from footsteps and other vibrations. 3. Sufficient distance from the loudspeakers to prevent howling caused by acoustic feedback frequency response is linear and tone is passed on without boost or reduction. [5] Balance Control (Balance) Clockwise rotation emphasizes the right channel, counterclockwise rotation emphasizes the left channel By means of the balance control, the relative strength of the volume of the right and left channels can be adjusted. This control is usually set in the center position. [| Volume Control (Master Volume) This controls the volume of the amplifier and all other program sources (with the exception Cf microphones) connected with it. Clockwise rotation increases volume; counterclockwise rotation decreases it. 7) Loudness Switch (Loudness) Setting the switch in the on position boosts the very low base when the listening volume is very low, as, for example, when listening to music tate at night. At high volume levels, leave this switch off {B) Tape Monitor Selector (T. Moni) By means of this switch, tape monitoring of @ tape deck connected to the receiver may be accomplished. If the tape deck has provisions for tape monitoring, depressing the T. Moni button enables the sound on the tape to be heard while recording is in progress. When the button is released, the recording source is monitored. By switching back and forth from Tape to Source, the quality of the source and recording can be compared. When records are being played and during radio reception, the button should be released (Source position); in the Tape position (depressed), only signals from the tape deck can be heard, 3] Turntable Selector Switch (Selector - Phono) This button is depressed when input source is the turntable. 10] FM-Stereo Selector Switch (Selector FM Auto) This button should be depressed for FM radio reception. When button is depressed, the tuner is automatically set for FM-stereo ‘or mono reception, When stereo programs are being received, the FM-stereo indicator lamp on the tuning scale will ight. With monaural reception, the same sounds will be heard, but without the spatial effect of stereo. 11] AM Radio Selector Switch (Selector - AM) Depress this button for AM ra Note: There is an interlock between the program selectors for PHONO, FM and AM radio, When one of the buttons is depressed, the other releases automatically, reception. 2 Microphone Level Control (Mic Vol) Microphone input level increases when knob is turned clockwise, and decreases when turned counterclockwise. When no microphone is connected, the knob should be turned as fer as possible in the counterclockwise direction. By means of this control, microphone input le can be regulated when mixing with other recording sources as, for example, records or radio programs. 13) Microphone Jack (Mic) Accepts microphones with a standard plug. Locating the jack on the front of the receiver makes for increased convenience. 4] Signal Strength Meter (SIGNAL) For FM and AM reception. Tune ina station so that the needle deflects as far as possible to the right. Also helpful for finding the ‘optimum antenna position: tune in the station ‘then move or turn the antenna into the position that gives maximum needle deflection. 5) Center-Zero Tuning Meter (TUNING) Only for FM reception. When the needle moves to the exact center position, the station is tuned in precisely. (i) FM and AM (Dial Scale) For selection of AM and FM radio stations by ‘means of the tuning knob. Scales indicate frequencies for FM and AM bands. I Scales FM Stereo Indicator Lamp (FM STEREO) ‘The red indicator lights up when an FM stereo program is being received. If a monaural program or weak stereo program is received, the Lamp will not light. 18) Tuning Knob For selecting AM and FM programs. When the indicator is set on a station, this will be shown Con the signal strength meter and, for FM, the center-zero tuning meter. sicna\ Fig. 1 TUNNG — Fig. 2 FM 3000 Fig. 3 TFANTENNA, AM Antenna (3 FM Antenna Connectors (FM ANTENNA) FM Room Antenna: In areas with good FM reception, connect the ‘T-shaped room antenna supplied with the receiver. The two split lugs should be firmly attached, and the ends of the antenna spread apart on a wall or the ceiling, ‘The room antenna should be placed in such a ‘way that multipath reception does not occur, Which would be heard as distortion. By doing this, optimum FM reception will be guaranteed, FM External Antenn In areas blocked by high buildings or mountains, reception quality may suffer due to multipath reception. If this is the case, a multi-lement external FM antenna should be installed in place of the room antenna in such a way that optimum FM reception is obtained. AM Antenna Connection (AM ANTENNA) In most cases, the built-in ferrite bar antenna should give satisfactory reception, and use of an external antenna will not be necessary. The external AM antenna will use a single connector only, as there is only one antenna lead. In buildings whose construction blocks AM als and for receiving distant stations, it is recommended that a long piece of wire or a standard AM antenna be connected Turntable Connections (PHONO) These connectors directly accept signals from a ‘turntable equipped with a magnetic stereo cartridge (MM type). The upper connector (L) is for the left channel, the lower connector (R) for the right. Note: For both input and output connections, the use of low-capacitance, shielded cable is recommended, This is the cable supplied with turntables, tape decks, and other components. ‘The difference in sound quality is noticeable. 2) Tape Inputs & Outputs (TAPE REC/PLAY) Jacks marked REC are outputs supplying als to a tape deck for recording. Jacks marked PLAY accept signals from a tape deck for playback. The upper (REC and PLAY) jacks are for the left channel, the lower for the right channel. @3 DIN Connection for Record/Playback (REC/PB) Tape decks equipped with a DIN socket may be ‘connected using this jack. The socket serves for both playback and recording. Also, in so-called “microphone mixing & recording," the ‘compound microphone-plus-other-source signal can be obtained from this connector and tape-recorded. If your tape deck is not equipped with a DIN jack, use a cable with @ S:pole DIN connector on one end (for Connection with the receiver) and pin-plugs on the other end (for connection with the tape deck). 24) Speaker Terminals (SPEAKERS) As this receiver has a built-in speaker matrix circuit for quadriphonic sound reproduction, two pairs of speakers can be connected to it at the same time. The front speakers then reproduce the normal stereo signal, while the backspeakers reproduce an electronically. processed signal that simulates the indirect, diffused sound heard in a live concert performance, ‘The two upper terminals are for the front speakers (the upper-left terminal for the right, the upper-right for the left-front loudspeaker); the two lower terminals are for the back speakers (lower-left for the right, the lower-right for the left-back loudspeaker. When only one air of loudspeakers is used, these should be connected with the upper terminals (FRONT. SPEAKERS). The connecting cables are equipped with polarized plugs and for that reason there is no danger of connecting the speakers improperly. 23 AC Voltage Selector, Fuses ‘Some units are equipped with voltat selectors on the rear panel, but some are not (depending on export country). For units with voltage selectors: Your unit may be oprated on any of the following voltages: 110, 120, 220, or 240 VAG, 50/60H2. This equipment has been adjusted for operation with the rated power voltage shown on the voltage card on the rear panel. The most common setting is240 V. Others have been adjusted to the local voltage. BEFORE using this equipment, however, CHECK that the adjusted rated voltage corresponds to the voltage used in your area. If by chance, the voltages do not agree, change the voltage setting to the correct voltage. CAUTION: NEVER RESET THE SYSTEM WHILE THE POWER CORD IS PLUGGED INTO AN AC OUTLET, AS YOU ARE LIABLE TO RECEIVE A SHOCK. ‘The voltage selector also contains the fuse holder. First remove the knurled and slotted fuse holder by turning it ‘counterclockwise with the fingertips or 2 coin, This will facilitate removal of the fuse. Now rip the voltage selector plug by the fingertips and remove it from its socket. Reinsert it firmly in the position that shows your voltage figure in the cut-out section. Now replace the fuse in the fuse holder and restore the fuse holder in position by screwing it back in. The system is now set to operate on the voltage shown in the cut-out of the voltage selector plug, For units without voltage selectors: ‘These units can be used only in countries where the AC voltage is that specified on ‘the rear pane! Fuse Replacement If for some reason the AC power fuse (in the voltage selector} burns out, replace it with a fuse of the same ampere rating. If the fuse burns out repeatedly, contact your Onkyo service station for assistance. Fuse ratings are: TIO ~120V ccs VA 220~ 240V rss 0.5 A, Fig. 7 Fig. 8 Fig. 10 Tracking force dit (scale reading 0) Fig. 12 @o Fig. 19 Turntable Assembly ‘The turntable is a complex device which is sensitive to mechanical shocks. For this reason, it should be assembled according to the following instructions (see photographs and illustrations) Remove Stop Screws: With a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the motor stop screws A and B and the chassis stop screw C and D (see fig.13). The chassis now floats on its spring suspension. Push it down lightly to confirm that the chassis is not in contact with the cabinet. Keep the screws you have removed; they will be needed again to secure the platter and motor board when you want to ship the unit again Unpack Platter: Remove the platter and rubber mat from the packing, Set the record speed selector at 45 RPM, Place Platter on Spindle: ‘Set the drive belt on the inner rim of the platter without twisting it. Apply tension ‘to the belt as shown in Fig.7 while simultaneously setting the platter on its spindle. Lead the belt around the stepped ‘motor pulley. Check the Drive Bel 1. Check that the belt lays flat on the stepped-pulley (Fig. 8). 2. Place the platter speed selector in the 33 RPM setting and set the belt in the guide (Fig. 9) 3, Place the rubber mat on the platter. Adjusting Tonearm Horizontal Balancing of the Tonearm: Remove the hook, stylus cover, and the rubber band holding the tonearm. Place the balance ‘weight on the stub at the rear of the tonearm and turn in the direction of the arrow until the tonearm moves freely in a horizontal direction, parallel to the platter surface (Fig.10). Set the Tracking Force Adjustment Ring t0 Zert Hold the balance weight in one hand while turing the tracking force adjustment ring Until the zero point is aligned with the index. line (Fig.11) Adjust Tracking Force: ‘Turn the balance weight in the direction of the arrow until the correct tracking force value is indicated on the scale. Correct tracking force for the cartridge supplied is 2 grams, The adjustment ring permits changes of tracking force in 0.8 gram steps. One complete revolution of the ring represents a 4 gram ‘change in tracking force (Fig.12). Overhang Adjustment The correct overhang of the tonearm is 11 mm. When replacing the cartridge, set the stylus position for an overhang of ‘11 mm. Turntable Faci Record Speed Selector Sets speed of platter to 33-1/3 or 45 RPM ‘The lever should be moved only when the platter is turning, otherwise the drive belt may be twisted 27) Automatic Shut-Off Lever (CUT LEVER) To stop the record before it has ended, push the lever gently to the left while the record is playing. The tonearm will be automatically lifted from the record and returned to the tonearm rest, 28 Tonearm Lift By using this control, the user is spared the necessity of taking care to gently lift the tonearm on and off the record by hand 2 Tonearm The precision manufactured, statically balanced tonearm will guarantee excellent tracking ability. The cartridge is replaceable 30) Tonearm Rest with Lock Serves to hold the tonearm steady on the arm rest when the turntable is not in use. 34) Platter The aluminum die-cast platter weighs 0.7 ka and is equipped with a belt drive. Ie is 30 em in diameter. These features guarantee maximum rotational stability. 2 Tracking Force Adjustment Provides precise adjustment of the tracking force (see Section “Adjusting,” page 8). 33] Spindle Adaptor Use of the adaptor permits one to play records with large center holes. Service Replacing the Stylus ‘The cartridge is provided with a diamond tipped stylus. Life expectancy of the stylus is approximately 600 hours, which represents the playing time of some 1,000 LP sides. A worn diamond-tip will not only adversely effect the sound, but will also damage the record, For safety’s sake, itis @ good idea to replace the stylus somewhat prior to the end of its life expectancy. To replace the stylus, remove the cartridge {and pull out the stylus in the direction of the arrow; insert anew stylus. Do not touch the stylus needle during replacement - itis extremely sensitive. The replacement stylus (Part No. DN-35ST) is available at Onkyo service centers (Fig. 14). Lubrication ‘See nearest Onkyo service center Replacement of Stepped-Pulley for AC Frequency Change ‘The turntable is supplied from the factory set for 50 Hz Ac power. The stepped pulley must be replaced for 60 Hz AC areas. Your local ‘Onkyo service center will also be glad to perform this work. Fig. 14 Tin eh og 5 UO Fae Live sc Not above eve level Fig. 17 Speaker Placement ‘The attractively designed two-way speakers are an integral part of your Y-7000 modular stereo system. The 26 liter boxes can be used in either a horizontal or vertical position Each speaker box contains a high-compliance 16 em woofer which delivers high-power bass and mid-range through a cone with free edge, and a 5 cm cone tweeter which produces highs. ‘The speaker wires are permanently attached to the speakers. ‘The sound that you finally hear from your hi-fi system depends greatly on the quality of all components used, but is also greatly influenced by the acoustics of your listening room and the placement of the speakers. As rooms vary considerably, no strict rules can be given, but the following general hints may prove valuable. Which side of room? In a rectangular room, itis usually advisable to place the speakers on one short side of ‘the room ‘Dead’ or ‘live’ side of the room? Deep pile carpeting, heavy draperios and upholstered furniture make a room (or @ part of it) acoustically ‘dead.’ On the other hand, blank walls and floor make a room ‘tive’, meaning that it reflects sound waves. If your room has a ‘dead! and a ‘live’ side, it is usually better to place the speakers in the ‘live’ portion radiating the sound into the ‘dead’ side. On the floor or above Unless specifically designed as ‘floor-standing ‘types,’ speakers should preferably not be placed directly on the floor. If no suitable shelf is available, set the speakers on wooden for conerete blocks or commercially available speaker stands, Floor placement causes intensified, unnaturally strong bass response, (On the other hand, speakers should not be placed higher than eye level How far apart? Ideally, the distance between the speakers should be the same as that between the listener and each speaker. Placing the speakers too far apart causes a ‘hole in the = 105 middle’ effect. In corners? Generally, corner placement causes intensified bass response. Flat against the wall? Leave at least an inch (2 or 3 em) of space between the speakers and the wall behind them: Places to avoid? Speakers as well as other stereo components should not be placed close to heaters. Also avoid dust and very high humidity Rooms sometimes have so-called ‘dead spots,’ and speaker placement in such a spot can reduce certain sound frequencies considerably, causing dips in the overall frequency response. Such spots should be ‘avoided by all means; they can be found only by trial and error.
