Introduction
Technology has a great impact in today’s generation especially the teens. People are
mostly dependent to them. One of the examples of the product of high-tech is the smart
phone. Many teenagers specifically high school students are addicted to this kind of
gadget. Smart phone is a great help but too much usage of smartphone can cause some
harm to us.
Into today’s world, digital technology changes so rapidly and integrates into our
society at such an accelerated rate, it is hard to keep up with it, let alone reflect on the
effects it has on our lives (Kim 2013). The development of high technologies is very
progressive and it can produce another kind of technology or device that can make our
life easier like for instance, smart phones.
A smart phone is one of the products of high-tech and it influences majority of the
students in Kinawe National High School (KNHS). Students even the teachers has this
kind of device that may help them in their studies like browsing for the internet or it can
store important files and documents.
A smart phone represents the current pinnacle of mobile phone development,
coupling phone capabilities with the additional functionalities of a PDA (Kibona and
Rugina 2015.) A smartphones is a device which has feature of both a computer and a
mobile device (Mahmood 2014). It can store a lot of data and it has a large memory that
can keep both files and documents and also it is easy to handle and carry. A smartphone
is also one of the best ways of communication. It can store applications that you can
easily use. One tap and here it goes!
Smartphones enable the teachers and the students to interact with each other
anywhere and everywhere (Park and Lee 2011). Students can access to any kind of
information just like research at any moment.
Even smartphones is a great help to the students but also it has some negative effects
when it is abusively used as what Junco 2013 says that “All things has advantages and
disadvantages…” improper usage of smartphones can led to distractions because of its
ability to become entertainment and can access the students to social networks or even
without internet connections, still the students can play mobile games and can listen to
the music and they can set aside their school works and homeworks.
This study aims to find out what are the educational effects of too much using
smartphones in the students of Kinawe National High School.
Conceptual Framework
This is a research tool intended to assist a researcher to develop awareness and
understanding of the situation under scrutiny and to communicate it.
The study employed the conceptual framework as shown in figure 1.1 below.
Figure 1.1. The concept of the Present Study.
Educational Effects of too much using Smartphones to the students of Kinawe
National High School
The conceptual framework, (figure 1.1) identifies various areas and effects and
how they inter-play to produce adverse effects on participation. These are: First, Attempt
has been made to identify student using gadgets specifically, mobile phones and
secondly, there are factors; distraction in the class and cellphone addiction.
Research Questions
This study will be guided by the following questions:
1. Is too much usage of mobile phones can affect to the academic performance
among the students of Kinawe National High School (KNHS)?
2. Is using cellphone during class lectures can distract the attention of the student?
Methodology
There were two methods of data collection used in this study. First, the researcher
created a survey which asked questions regarding how much each student uses each
technological device, when they used this, and what they used the technology for in
regards to classroom assignments, projects, and activities.
The survey was distributed to 30 respondents using fish ball method and from the
30 respondents 10 were male and 20 were female. The researcher sorted through each
survey and organized the data collected to determine how much each student used mobile
phones while working on classroom assignments. The surveys allowed the researcher to
determine if a student who uses mobiles is really distracted during lectures.
Recommendation
Corresponding to the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations
are proposed:
1. For the student grade to improve even though they are with their smartphones,
some restrictions must be made on the usage of smartphone like making
regulations that no student is allowed to enter into lecture room with his/her
smartphone switched on in order to make them concentrate on listening and
taking notes from the teacher.
2. Disciplining once self. If a student really wanted to learn then he/she can
manage and know his/her limits and it’s called self-management.
