HYDROSPHERE 100

The Oceans
 Around 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans.

 The largest ocean on Earth is the Pacific Ocean, covering

around 30% of the Earth’s surface.

 The deepest known area of the Earth’s oceans is known as

the Mariana Trench. It’s deepest point measures 11km.
That’s a long dive down!

 The longest mountain range in the world is found under

water. Stretching over 56,000km, the Mid-Oceanic Ridge is
a mountain chain that runs along the centre of the ocean
basins.
 About 70% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by the
oceans.
 We have only explored about 5% of the world’s oceans.

Estimated to be about 361740000 square kilometers, the
hydrosphere covers 70.8% of the earth. It encompasses all water
bodies, icebergs, as well as water vapor in the atmosphere. It also
includes underground water, which is in the aquifers and wells.
Water moves through the hydrosphere in what is known as
the Water Cycle or Hydrologic Cycle. Namely, water collects
in clouds before falling to Earth as rain or snow. This water then
collects in water bodies such as oceans, lakes, and rivers.

From the water bodies, it evaporates into the atmosphere and the
cycle continues.

Importance of Hydrosphere
1. It is a component of living cells
2. It is a habitat for many living organisms
3. It helps on regulating the climate
4. It is the reason why we have the atmosphere
5. It is the most common human need
The earth’s hydrosphere is about 333million cubic miles.
About 70% of the Earth’s water is in snow form and it can be found it
