Idealism has three main implications
for education:
+ an emphasis on theory before
practice
+ an emphasis on logical
thinking
+ a high value attached to
liberal education.

Idealism prescribes certain fundamental aims of education which are directly influenced by
the aims and principles of life. In this context Ross puts forth the view,“The function of
education is to help us in our exploration of the ultimate universal values so that truth of the
universe may become our truth and give power to our life.’’ Some of the important aims of
education as laid down by idealists are given below

(1) SELF REALIZATION.

According to idealism man is the most beautiful creation of god-His grandest work. It lays
great stress on the exaltation of human personality it is self-realization The aim of
education is to develop the self of the individuals higher till self-realizations achieved It is
in fact making actual or real the highest potentialities of the self.

(2) UNIVERSAL EDUCATION.

Education according to idealism should be universal in nature. The universe is regarded as

a thought process. Education should be based on the teaching of Universal truth from the
stand-point of rationality of the Universe

(3) SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT.

Idealists give greater importance to spiritual values in comparison with material

attainments.According to Rusk, “Education must enable Mankind through its culture to
enter more and more fully into the spiritual realm, and also enter more and more fully into
the spiritual realm, and also enlarge the boundaries of spiritual realm”.

(4)TRANSMISSION AND PROMOTION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

The aim of idealistic education is the preservation ; enrichment and transmission of

culture, Education must contribute to the development of culture .It should help in
enlarging the boundaries of spiritual realm

(5)CULTIVATION OF MORAL VALUES

According to idealism, man is essentially a moral being. Therefore, moral, intellectual

and aesthetic aspects of his personality should be promoted. According to Dr.Prem Nath
“The process of education must lead to the deepest spiritual insight and to the highest
moral and spiritual insight and to the highest moral and spiritual insight and to the
highest moral and spiritual conduct .”

(6) PREPARATION FOR A HOLY LIFE

Idealism prepares an individual for a holy life. Frostbelt says.”The object of education is
the realization of faithful, pure, inviolable and hence holy life.’’

(7) DEVELOPMENT OF INTELLIGENCE AND RATIONALITY

Idealism wishes that education should develop the mind fully. It makes a person rational
as well. Only the highly developed mind can understand the all pervading force.
The idealists believe that education must help in the full evolution of mind , the
emancipation of spirit, self realization and the realization of higher values of life and to
train the whole man completely and fully for manhood and not some part of man.

Realism vs. Antirealism

Comenius
Ideas are kept alive through interest, and one function of education is to see that ideas are retained in the
mind through books, lectures, and other teaching devices.

John Locke believed play was an important part of the

learning process because it served two purposes:
1. Kept the students engaged
2. Rewarded the students for hard work
Locke also believed there should be two different types of
curriculum:
1. One for the elites in the upper class
2. A second for the working, lower class
 A principle of independence - reality, knowledge, and value exist independently of the human
mind

 A person who follows a true purpose leads a rational life of moderation

 Aristotole's Principle of the Golden Mean - harmony and balance of the mind and body; a good
education helps to achieve this idea

Role of the Teacher

John Amos Comenius (philosopher and educator in the 16th century) - Stated that it is possible "for the
individual to obtain all knowledge if provided with the proper kind of education when based on a
curriculum to perfect one's natural powers by training the senses."
" Schools should be enjoyable places with sympathetic teachers."

 Teacher is a leader and it is the teacher's responsibility to teach in the most effective way
possible
 When teaching, it is necessary for the teacher to present the material in a systematic, organized
way

 Student understanding of the material is greater because the presentation is organized allowing
the students to recall the information more effectively

 Subjects of study in the classroom should be practical and useful

 Concepts of scientific research and development are emphasized and considered important

Role of the Teacher
John Locke - Realist Philosopher
 When achieving learning objectives, the materials such as a model of the universe to study the
planets, help the students relate more easily to the subjects

 With technology, the teachers are encouraged to use the most up-to-date technology available so
that its use can most directly translate to what the students would use in a practical sense

 Tests should be well-defined and cover materials that have been studied in class so that the test
can be a true representation of the students' learning

History of Realism

 Good school programs need to be able to present facts in interesting and exciting ways in order
for students to engage and want to learn the material.

 The teacher's personality needs lend itself to help engage the students in the learning process.

 The students need a strong background of facts to help them understand the materials.

 In an article by Lomas, the idea of perception is related to realism:

" Perception, it is alleged, is never independent of belief because it is inferentially derived from a system
of beliefs (a theory).
The theory determines the perception. In particular, perception is able to supply correct information that
can be used to justify propositions in school mathematics and science."
For example: Pythagorean theorem: A student uses visual perception to check that a triangle with sides
3, 4, and 5 units contain a right angle as it should according to the theorem.

Classroom Activities
Johann Herbart (realist educator) -Believed in a system of "correlation and concentration". He felt that
teaching should be multilateral. Geography, for example, should be taught so that the student can see
relationships that provide the basis for new knowledge.

 Also considered Religious Realism

 Promotes the use of study to move into higher realms of thought

 Fosters the idea of the Great Books - curriculum should be based on great works of literature
leading to "great ideas" or universal truths.

 Plato believed that one acquired knowledge of ideas through contemplation of ideas.

 Aristotle believed that one could also acquire a knowledge of ideas, or forms, through the study of
matter.

Montessori Method
 Book written by Max Rafferty in 1963 was a criticism to American education
 Stated that basic subject matter and other staples of American education, such as a concern for
religion, patriotism, and capitalism, were being neglected

Aims of Education
Realism is very rigid in classroom practice
5 Steps of Learning:
1. Preparation
2. Presentation
3. Association
4. Systematization (generalization)
5. Application
Children are to be kept occupied as much as possible and that corporal punishment is to be used when
necessary.

 Utilizes objects as an important part of the learning process because students can relate to the
educational materials and it can create a stronger learning experience

 Method encourages the teaching of religion because the students have spiritual forces within that
can be used to relate to the topics or materials

 Students learn independently with materials that are self-correcting

Realism in Math and Science

Methods of Education

 Use of scientific method

 Deals with the world as reflected through

observation and study

 Characterized by inductive reasoning

What are the Aims of Education

According to Realism?

The aim of education according to realism is to give to the pupil a complete knowledge
and understanding of human society human nature, motives and institutions. Education
must explain to the pupil how he is related to the world of man and to the world of
nature.
The purpose of this explanation is to enable the pupil to adjust himself in the
environment in which he must live. Rabelais, a realist, says that the aim of education is
“the formation of a complete man, skilled in art and industry,” the development of the
whole man, physically, morally, intellectually.

To Milton, another realist, education should prepare for actual living in a real world when
he writes: “I call, therefore, a complete and generous education that which fits a man to
perform skillfully, justly, and magnanimously all the offices, both private and public, of
peace and war.” In other words, it may be said that according to realism the aim of
education is not to produce a scholar or a professional man, but to produce a man of
the world of affairs.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Education should provide to the pupil and insight with the help of which he may make
sensible choices and decisions in order to lead a successful and pleasurable life.

Realism wants that the natural tendencies and activities of the child should not be
repressed and that the child should be helped to develop up to his utmost perfection so
that he may control the natural environment to his best advantage.
