SEL-751A Feeder Protection Relay
Hands-On Exercise:
Frequency (81, 81R) Settings and Testing
81 Over- and Underfrequency Settings
In this application scenario, you will set underfrequency instantaneous and time-delayed
elements. You will also set the 81R frequency rate-of-change element to trip if the frequency
drops too quickly. Then, you will test these settings to ensure proper element operation.
Note: This scenario assumes the SEL-751A includes optional voltage inputs.
Step 1. First, enter the (81) underfrequency settings for this example:
Level 1 underfrequency time-delayed element: This element trips if the frequency
drops below 59.80 Hz for more than 1 second.
Level 2 underfrequency instantaneous element: This element is set at 60.02 Hz and
is used in verification testing.
Tripping must be delayed by 1 second to allow for brief system fluctuation.

81R Frequency Rate-of-Change Settings
Step 2. Enter the (81R) frequency rate-of-change settings for this example:
a. Enable 1 rate-of-change frequency element with a voltage supervision value of
0.1 volt.
b. Trip if frequency decreases at a rate exceeding 2.00 Hz/second.
c. Delay tripping for 1.00 second to allow for brief system fluctuations.

Step 3. Add the 81D1T, 81D2T, and 81R1T Relay Word bits to one of the SER trigger
lists, such as to SER3 as shown below. The relay sequential events recorder (SER)
will be used to verify underfrequency and frequency rate-of-change element time
delays.

Step 4. Save and then send the settings to the relay by clicking File > Send.
Frequency Element (81) Testing
Verify the operation of frequency elements.
Step 1. Connect a source of variable three-phase voltage and frequency to the relay as
shown below. Use a jumper wire connecting VB to VN for delta-connected
voltages.
Figure 4. Voltage and Frequency Connection
Step 2. Use the human-machine interface (HMI) window to clear the SER report. The SER
will be used to verify the accuracy of the 81D1TD delay setting.

Step 3. Run the SEL-AMS 81 UF Timing test (on the Student CD in your course manual).
This test is a two-state test. State 1 applies nominal system voltages at 62 Hz
frequency for four seconds. State 2 instantly shifts system frequency to 58.0 Hz.
The 81D2T element is asserted during State 1 and is deasserted during State 2. The
81D1T element is deasserted during State 1 and is asserted during State 2.
Step 4. Navigate to the ACSELERATOR® QuickSet HMI by clicking Tools > HMI > HMI.
Step 5. Click SER to view the SER records.
Step 6. Subtract the deassertion time of 81D2T from the assertion time of 81D1T to verify
the 81D1TD delay.
Frequency Rate-of-Change Element Testing
Step 1. To verify the operation of the 81R1T Frequency Rate-of-Change element, we must
first disable the 81D1T and 81D2T elements. Turn these elements off in the
ACSELERATOR QuickSet settings editor as shown below, and then send the
settings to the relay.
Figure 5. Disable the 81D1T and 81D2T Elements in QuickSet
Step 2. Run the following two tests (on the Student CD in your course manual):
a. SEL-AMS 81 ROC No_op test is a single-state test. The frequency is ramped
from 60 Hz to 56 Hz over a six-second interval. Since this is a 1 Hz/second
rate-of-frequency change, the relay should not operate.
b. SEL-AMS 81 ROC Op test is a two-state test. State 1 applies 60 Hz for 6
seconds. State 2 ramps frequency from 60 Hz to 42 Hz over a six-second
interval. Since this is a 3 Hz/second rate of frequency change, the relay should
operate.
