A Topographic Journey Background: Topographic maps are a lot of fun to use, especially if you enjoy spending time outdoors. A topographic map shows changes in elevation on Earth’s surface. This is done through the use of hundreds of lines called contour lines. A contour line connects points of the same elevation. Elevation refers to the distance of a location above or below sea level. Topographic maps contain a lot of other information, including the location of roads, rivers, streams, lakes, buildings, airports, and railroads, to name just a few. In this activity you are going to take an imaginary hiking trip using the attached topographic map. The map includes a portion of the USGS map of Rutland, Vermont. We will start at the west side of the map and travel toward the east. The map includes a legend, which you should study before you begin your journey.
