Benjamin Franklin stated, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.

” With

public schools financed by the local, state, and federal governments, educating our students has

become very political. Our politicians, and those who elect them, must realize the importance of

investing in our students.

Politicians have a direct impact on our schools as they make rules and laws that affect the

policy and finances of a district. Public schools must follow state and federal law, even if

mandates go unfunded. State lawmakers in Minnesota pass a budget bill every two years with

education being a large percentage of the budget. Policy changes affecting schools occur each

year in the legislature.

School districts, especially superintendents, must advocate for adequate revenue and

positive policy changes for our schools and our students. Organizations representing districts

and administrators are constantly lobbying legislators to make decisions that will positively

impact our schools and our students. Superintendents are often asked to testify on education

related bills being presented to house and senate committees.

Superintendents must always be aware of communicating with the public the needs of the

district, the current conditions of the district, and the connection of state and federal laws to

education. The community must understand the needs of the school and the political connection

in order to vote for education friendly legislators. Having the community support the district

also helps in lobbying legislators for what is best for schools.

Community leaders also play an important part in influencing local taxpayers when

schools are looking to pass a levy to supplement funding. Superintendents must work to build a

relationship with local leaders and community members at all times.
