CHAPTER 3

Research Design and Methodology

This chapter presents the research method and its design. This chapter

also tackles the experimental instruments and procedure, and the statistical

treatment of the data. Overall, the process of the analyzation and observation of

the data will be specified.

Method of Research

The research shall follow the experimental approach in gathering data.

Specimens would be treated with varying conditions and are tested under the

same procedure. The data will be recorded, analyzed, and compared at the end

of the experimentation process.

The procedure that all the wooden specimens will undergo is burning. The

time in which these specimens will be burned completely, until the wood is

reduced into a black, crumbly, charred state. Under the term conditions stated

above are as follows: the coatings applied, the ratio of the pulverized glass to be

mixed with the paint. The same type of wood would be used as a specimen.

Other data such as viscosity of the mixture, consistency, closeness of glass

particles within the paint, etc. will be recorded. This method is decided by the

researchers as the most effective for this specific study.

Research Instruments/Materials:

1. Fine Pulverized Glass – Glass from gin bottles will be used, most specifically

Gin Bottles that are made up of borosilicate glass that have a density of 2.23

g/cm³ and the temperature borosilicate glass can withstand before fracturing is

about 165°C The pulverized glass must pass the No. 200 sieve.

2. Wood Paint – flat latex paint commonly used for wood.

3. Wooden Sample – Commercially available 3/4" thick plyboard by 8 inches x 4

inches in dimensions.

4. Makeshift Furnace –an improvised oven made from unused concrete cylinder

samples, pieces of aluminum, and hollow blocks filled with burning charcoal.

5. Microscope – for observation of the behavior and characteristics of glass

particles as it is, homogenously, combined with wood paint.

6. Primer – It is also called undercoat; it will serve to as a preparatory coating for

the mixture before it is applied

7. Graduated cylinder – an instrument used to measure the amount of volume of

the materials to be used.

8. instruments used in determining viscosity, consistency

Experimental Procedure

General Procedure

All procedures shall be done by a minimum of 4 trials for every mix

proportion which follows the ASTM standard for testing which requires at least 2

trials per experiment.

Obtaining Pulverized Glass

Gin bottles will be collected from any possible place, from junk shops to

local homes. These gin bottles will be pulverized repeatedly by any means

possible and will be sieved using the no. 40, no. 80, no. 100 and no. 200 sieve

with a pan lying underneath. Only the particles which have passed the no. 200

sieve will be used for the experiment.

Combining the Wood Paint and the Pulverized Glass

A graduated cylinder will be used in order to measure the amount of

pulverized glass to be mixed with the paint. The percentage of pulverized glass

to the total volume of the mixture would be as follows, 20%, 30%, and 40%.

Homogeneity will be achieved through constant mixing. The amount of mixture to

be produced will be denoted as the experimentation goes on.

Application of the Paint Mixture

The samples will first be applied with primer to provide more adhesion

between the paint and the wood. The wooden samples will then be coated by the

mixture with the use of a paint brush. Coatings will be applied with a 5-hour

interval after the application of one coat. The drying time after the final coat will

be 5 hours as well. The researchers will apply 2 coats for each specimen.

Preparation of the Furnace

The furnace will be made with the use of unused concrete cylinders and

hollow blocks as the walls. Pieces of aluminum will be placed at the sides and

the bottom to prevent the occurrence of fire accident. Burning charcoal will be

placed inside the furnace and will be covered with the use of hollow blocks or a

makeshift steel barrier. It must be taken into notice that protective gloves and

mask must be used upon commencement of this part of the experiment.

Gasoline will be poured on the charcoal and will serve as the main starter

of fire. A match stick will be used to create a spark. The specimens of specific

coatings and ratios of pulverized glass will each be placed in the furnace and will

be observed every hour taking out all specimens which showed signs of damage

with each observation. A wood sample without any coatings will also be tested as

a standard for the fire retardation abilities of the mixture.

Physical Properties of Mixture

There are instruments and methods that are used to measure the

consistency, viscosity, and closeness of glass particles in the paint will.
