Rotary Drum Vacuum Filter

Objective:> To understand functioning of rotary drum filter which is
operating under vacuum and know which are the factors which affect
the performance.
Aim:> To find out the value of specific cake resistance for a given slurry
of CaCO3.

Inference

➢ First of all we have made a slurry by mixing CaCO3 in 40l of

water. Then the slurry is continuosly mixed. We have set the
pressure at certain value for first run. Then we have stirred the
mixture untill we have got a 3cm rise of height in manometer
reading.

➢ During this period few layers of filtrate has deposited on the

rotary drum. When the manometer reading has reached 3 cm
height difference we have stopped the circulation of rotary
drum.As the drum rotates the slurry is sucked on the surface, this
is cake, when the cake is rotating out it is dewatered in the drying
area.
➢ The cake becomes dry as the drum continuously suck the cake
and takes the water out of it.After few time this liquid cake turns
into dry solid cake. After that we have scrapped the filtrate that
has deposited on the rotary drum and taken the scrapped filtrate
drum in cup.We have observed the weight of cup. This is wet
weight of filtrate.

➢ Now we have put the cup into oven so that we know the value of
dry weight of filtrate. With the help of few calcuations we are able
to find the value of specific cake resistance.

➢ Rotary vacuum dry filter gives the advantage of continuous

operation so it is better than other dryers. It is used for collection
of magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, starch and many
more pharmaceutical uses.
