the Brahmo Conference for giving me this

the paramount realization of the success
of all such congregations. Many saints and
learned people have over the centuries and
from time to time stared with regret that we
are too much attached to mundane affairs.
We are mostly after material gains and the
symptom of amaterialistic person is that he,
being unable to attain truth becomes
fastidiously attached to materialism. All
throughout the year we pursue that trend.
Today we need something and tomorrow
some other thing.Today we are after some
work here and tomorrow some
misconceived work elsewhere. We are
every day pressed between deeds and
misdeeds.
However,on this day we are invited
to the realm of happiness and you have
beckoned me to the invitation. I express my
gratitude to all of you and consider it to be
my good fortune. It is not necessary at this
juncture to raisethe issue of competence,
the happiness that emanates from the
company of others. We must enjoy and

We beckon the Lord of our souls
form the very core of ourhearts and we also
beckon the erstwhile Acharyas, who
adhered to the concept of Brahma. At the
very beginning we recall the sages of
ancient Indiawho were believers in the
concept of Brahma and who have left
behind for us the greatest treasures of self-
realization.We recall Jesus, Mohammad
and others who were the spiritual
teachers.Werecall Kabir,Dadu, Sri
Chaityanya, Guru Nanak and other well
Known propagators of religions of the
middle ages. Thereafter we remember
those in the realm of whose meditational
worship we are born. At first we remember
Raja Rammohan Roy who was the founding
father of the Brahmo Samaj, the founder of
the Brahmo Religion and the first path finder
of the new line in India, who has sown the
seeds of this really truthful universal religion
by his unrelenting efforts, and by tolerating
unaccountable abuses and pains and by
fighting against innumerable adverse forces
and who in spite of these obstacles had
opened the doors of the new life and well-
being in India by demolishing the walls of
accumulated misconception in the fields of
religion, social policy and also the national
policy of the country. Thereafter we
remember Maharshi Debendranath who
had laid the foundation of the worship of
“Brahma” by dint of deep meditation and
uninterrupted devotional practice. We also
remember BrahmanandaKeshab Chandra
who had made Bhagabatprayers the first
and principal step of religious life, who
striking abalance between the Knowledge
of “Brahma” and the worship of “Brahma”

with conscience, penance and prayer
transformed the Brahma with religion into
alively, fiery and devotional religion. We
remember Acharya Shibanath who
strengthened the Brahmo Samaj by his
selflessness and torrid faith. These and
many other faithful devotees and sages who
have fortified the meditational cult of the
Brahmo Religion by dint of service and
meditation and who strengthened our
Samaj. Today we remember all of them with
devotion and gratitude. It may not be out of
place in this context to recollect one of my

Remember also in this context what
the great Sannyasi of Dakshineswar and of
BelurMath said that there is a spark of the
divine in every man woman and child and
that the lowliest of the low has been created
by Godand God dwells within him.
The entire history of the
BrahmoSamaj since the days of
Rammohan has seen the evolution and
spread of the above ideas through the
instrumentality of great leaders and
stalwarts of the Samaj who followed in the
footsteps of the Raja whether they be
Maharshi Debendra or Brahmananda
Keshab or Pandit Shivanth and last but
certainly not the least Rabindranath Tagore.
In fact, it was through the works and writings
of this multi-faceted genius who regarded
himself not only as Brahmo but as an
international human being that the entire
concept of universal harmony took its finest
shape and expression and had it not been
for this Worthy son of Maharshi, the entire
history of this country would have taken a
totally different movement and direction. I

The purpose of human life as
according to veda is to know his Creator,
understand his attributes and lead a life as
ordained by Him. To give a meaning and
explain the vedic slokas(mantras), one has
to have a knowledge in the vedangas.
Vedangas are the 6 tools which are integral
parts of veda itself to unlock the real
knowledge in veda. As a comparison we can
show the phonetic rules, grammar rules,
dictionary, understanding of metaphors etc.
in the English language. Likewise, to
understand the vedic phonetics, dictionary
of vedic words, mathematic principles,

My I now address you as briefly as
possible on a subject whichI would like to
call World Religions and the Brahmo
Samajes. Firstly the BrahmoSamaj stands
for the new awakening of the soul in direct
and living contact with the supreme spirit.
Secondly the Brahmo Samaj
stands for the harmony and synthesis of
different religions which have come from
the direct contact with the living spirit. It is a
challenge to humanity in all its dissensions
and related activities and is a call for all to
meet and worship with one mind and heart
and spirit and to sing the praise of God in
one voice. The life of the spirit in living
contact with the supreme spirit is a life of
freedom and this life of freedom is the
gospel of the age. Be a person, free and
self organizing in one self and with all.This
is the message of the Brahmo Samaj.

different form and is no more recognizable
as vedic sanskrit. So, to understand the
actual meaning of a word in veda, one has
to refer to these vedangas. For example
“agni” in modern day sanskrit means fire,
or illumination from fire or heat. But
according to vedic Sanskrit, it is "The One
Almighty" Who illuminates the entire
universe and beyond, the light of knowledge,
the source of energy who causes all
illuminations, and "The source of all
radiations.” So if one analyses the vedic
hymn “agnimILE purO hitam”, modern
Sanskrit says “worship the fire which is so
beneficial to the world”. But the actual vedic
meaning is “worship the Only Lord who is
glorified with the attribute of agni, The One
Who is Beneficial to the entire creation.”(the

One vedanga is “ChandaH”. It is the
boundary of the veda mantra. Before
understanding the boundaries of the mantra,
the meaning for the word “mantra” has to
be sought for. The dictionary of veda which
is called as “Nirukta” defines the meaning
of “mantra” as “manaH tatra layam yAti

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was
very stern and astute by nature. But there
was also a soft streak in him. His close
associates noticed so many times that he
would start crying in distress whenever he
saw poor and weak people lying on the
footpath and street. He used to nurse the
sick people and some-times cremated
unclaimed bodies at the crematorium also.
He had a deep understanding about the life
on footpaths without a roof above, without
proper clothes and food. He used to share
his scholarship amount into three parts, one
to his family, one for himself and third for
the people in need. When he started earning
a permanent amount as salary from his
teaching, he distributed his money to the
needy families residing in his village
Birsingha and also spent towards the school
and medical facilities. Ishwar Chandra
Vidyasagar tried to provide free medical
facilities to the ailing people on the streets.
Cholera was one of the most rampant
diseases during those days. He used to
extend his service to cholera patients. For
his immense generosity and kind-
heartedness, people used address him
“DayaSagar” (Ocean of Kindness).
In 1847 he started one printing
press and started book printing. He and
his friend Madanmohantarkalankar tried to
make available the hymns related to folk and
economics in common language. They
used to publish the books with comics and
pictures to make them interesting even for
kids. The main aim of printing press was
to publish books that will inspire people and
unite them to fight against social evils.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar ’s
extremely humble personality inspired
others alot. His humility made him a
renowned and respected personality
across India. A well-known story from his
life as follows :
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and few
friends were working on a mission to start
Calcutta University. They were seeking
donations. Ishwarachandravidyasagar
wanted to seek funds from Nawab of
ayodhya. He already heard about his hard
heartedness but he didn’t want to give-up.

He went to the palace of the Nawab of
Ayodhya and presented the whole situation
in front of him. The Nawab on hearing this,
dropped his shoes in Vidyasagar’s donation
bag. Vidyasagar did not react but just
thanked him and left the place.
The next day, Vidyasagar organized
an auction of the Nawab’s shoes just in front
of the Nawab’s palace. People, in order to
impress the Nawab, including the
Nawab’s jahagirdars and court members
and other employees came forward and
started bidding. The shoes were sold for
Rs 1,000. The nawab got impressed by
this incident he called vidyasagar and gave
the same amount(ie., 1000/-) as donation
to the university. Vidyasagar had always
worked above his personal feelings and
towards his goals. Ultimately, his dream of
opening Calcutta University came true. He
influenced so many people with his strong
determination and humbleness.
Ishwara Chandra VidyaSagar
passed away on July 29. 1891. His loss was
deeply mourned by all the great stalwarts
in 19th century Bengal. Till today, one cannot
forget the contribution made by Ishwar
Chandra Vidyasagar towards the intellectual
and social up-liftment of the Bengal society,
making him one of the most important
proponents of the Bengal Renaissance.
The similarities between sri Raja ram

is the former has saved woman burning
under sati while the later empowered such
saved woman escaping from the
subsequent miserable lives. Both the
leaders are role models for youth of India
now instead of movie-stars. They are the
real time visionaries who suffered,

As per vedas there is no religion.
Religion is a collection of cultures, beliefs
and systems. Hence it has no proper
definition or meaning.The concept of
Brahma Dharmam is the concept of
dharma alone but not religion. Spirituality
has no relation with religion.As per
vedas,Dharma means – “Dharayathithi Iti
Dharmam”,which means it should be
followed by the entire universe irrespective
of the caste, creed, race or place. Brahma
means – “Brudadithi Brahmam,
Bhrooyat Na Iti Brahmam” means The
God(Almighty) is above the universe and
there is none above him. The
“Brahma”(Almighty) has given the “Dharma”

to be followed by the entire universe so it is
called Brahma Dharma. This is the reason
why Sri Raja ram mohun roy has given the
name as Brahma Samaj to this organization
which strongly believes and firmly follows
Brahma Dharma.
The ideology of Brahmasamaj is
very old, mentioned in vedas and followed
by great maharishis also. Hence we need
to follow this with pride and confidence as it
is the true path and a valid one. We need
not stumble at this fact. But nowadays
many brahmos are becoming self-
defensive. They are hesitating to declare
themselves as stanch brahmos. This poor
confidence leading so many anti brahmo
organizations to raise rumors about the
founder(Sri Raja Ram mohun roy) also.
This is the time for us to stand together and
oppose such things. We should encourage
people to follow Brahma Dharma and
promote truth. We should feel proud to
declare that we are brahmos.
