Healthsouth Corporate Scandal Reflection

Doing What’s Best to Doing What’s Right

In today’s fast paced lives from automation of activities to changing consumer wants and needs,
businesses must adapt these variation to adhere and maintain it’s position in the market. For
that reason, the strategies and actions taken by businessmen must also be constantly updated.
These issues brought light to different ideas put into action.Everything is just a matter of
judgement, some bring good results, while others don’t.

Embezzlement, fraud or stealing are just some of the issues that company owners face. Others
refer these occurrence as something rampant. What happened to Healthsouth is just another
fraud done by a collaborative effort of many individuals. One striking point from this issue is how
employees are swayed from doing what is right to doing what everyone does. The reporters
said that the issues surrounding Healthsouth was long known to everyone yet no one seems to
care and act right. This was because employees were threatened to spilling the tea since they
were afraid to the possible consequences and how it may affect the lives of the other
employees. Disclosing the fraudulent activities of the firm to world may destroy the lives of many
from their sources of income to their reputation. With that being said, the no one dared to spill
the truth not until Healthsouth Bookkeeper, Michael Vines, decided to act right.

The Healthsouth issue wouldn't be much of a problem only if one took an initiative to tell the
truth. But because of fear and intimidation something that was deemed wrong became a culture
and corporate norm leading to more fraudulent acts committed. To summarise everything, I
realized that just because everyone does it, doesn't mean it is always right. Do not be afraid to
go beyond the norms and speak to what you think is true and right. The road may be difficult but
in the end, light will always shine to those who stay true.
