“Our mission is to

connect you with the

people and things you
love, which only works
if people feel
comfortable expressing
themselves on
Instagram.”
- Instagram
The social media
giant is taking new
steps to reduce
cyberbullying on its
platform. Here are
some new features
we can expect:
1

AI
Moderators
Instagram has been
using AI to try and catch
bullying as it happens
on the platform.

By mapping similarities
between reported
comments, Instagram is
able to distinguish
which comments may
be offensive.
A new pop-up will
appear if a user tries
to comment
something seemingly
harmful, asking if the
user is sure they want
to post it. It will also
give them the
opportunity to “undo”
their comment.

Early tests show that

users that see this
pop-up will rephrase
the comment.
2

Account
Restriction
Besides taking
preventative action
against bullying,
Instagram is
implementing features to
empower users who may
fall victim to bullying.
The platform has pointed
out that unfollowing,
blocking, and reporting
seems to be intimidating,
so a new feature allows
the user to control
interactions on their
content.
Users will soon be
able to ‘Restrict’
other accounts.
A comment by a
restricted account will be
hidden to everyone else
unless it is approved by
the original poster.

An account’s recent
activity and read receipts
will also be hidden to
restricted users.
Through these new
moves, Instagram
is acknowledging
it has a big user
base, and thus a
big responsibility.
The platform is
showing its
commitment to
putting users first by
fostering a positive
and safe environment
for everyone.
