Travelling Solo
Read the story below carefully and answer the questions that follow.
1 It was Sam's first experience taking a flight alone. He had just turned eighteen. 1
He was going to visit his grandparents in Beijing, China. His parents were away 2
on a business trip and he was going to spend the June holidays with his 3
grandparents. Before they left for the trip, Sam's parents bought him a return 4
ticket and instructed him clearly on how to board the aeroplane. 5
2 Sam was excited as he had never travelled alone before. His parents were 6
worried about leaving him alone but he had assured them that he would be 7
able to take care of himself. Following his parents' instructions, Sam took a 8
taxi to the airport, searched for his check-in counter and checked in his 9
luggage. 10
4 Just as he was at the climax of the book, he was jolted back to his senses by a 17
loud announcement. "This is the last call for flight SQ 392, heading towards 18
Beijing. All passengers should proceed to Gate 39 for immediate boarding. 19
Thank you." Sam glanced at his boarding pass and got the biggest shock of his 20
life. "It is my flight number!" he gasped aloud. 21
5 Without hesitation, Sam dropped the book and glanced at the clock in the 22
book store. Five more minutes before the flight takes off. I can do this. Sam 23
thought to himself as he ran as fast as his legs could carry him to Gate 39. 24
"Please do not let me miss my flight," Sam prayed under his breath. On nearing 23
the gate, he heaved a sigh of relief when he saw that there were still a few 25
passengers who were queueing to board. He spotted the airline crew waving to 26
him. 27
6 Joining the queue as the last person, Sam was still panting very heavily. "Don't 28
