Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, can be extremely painful as well as embarrassing.

They are naturally occurring veins in the anal region that get swollen and
inflamed, and usually treatment of piles is simple and does not require surgery or
other significant medical intervention although you should certainly talk to your
doctor!

Symptoms of piles are straightforward. You might have bright red blood on your
toilet paper, stool, or in the toilet. Your anus may scratch and itch, or may also
burn and there may be extreme pain. Bowel movements in particular may cause extreme
pain. They may be swollen piles visible. In extreme cases they can look like
clusters of grapes around the anus and the pain can be excruciating.

Treatment of piles includes soaking in warm to hot water which will bring some
relief. Many people soak 3-5 times a day, often in the tub or a smaller basin for
convenience. There are even special basins that sit on top of the toilet for this
purpose called Sitz baths. Of course soaking so often can be next to impossible
when traveling or working but 3 times a day should be possible. After soaking, dry
carefully and gently.

Apply a soothing preparation to the affected area. There are several ointments and
lotions that will bring relief and that are widely available, including Witch Hazel
(a liquid) and Preparation H, a popular crème. Different topical preparations work
best for different people so you may want to experiment. These are available over
the counter.

Also, use of a non steroidal anti inflammatory (NSAID) such as ibuprofen can help
relieve pain and reduce swelling.

The three above, soaking, NSAIDs, and topical preparations will bring quick relief
and help the symptoms subside. They may be all you need for the treatment of piles,
but in addition the following are suggested as well.

Eat plenty of fiber and drink lots of fluids. This will help keep your stools soft
and reduce the pressure when defecating. Defecate whenever you feel the urge; do
not wait. If overweight, like so many of us are, consider loosing weight. Yes, the
treatment of piles is yet another health related reason to lose weight! Sitting
long periods of times can cause them to flare up as well. Exercise can help with
piles as well and is recommended.
