Course Overview
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course enables students to develop mathematical ideas and methods through the exploration of applications,
the effective use of technology, and extended experiences with hands-on activities. Students will investigate
relationships of straight lines in analytic geometry, solve problems involving the measurement of 3-dimensional
objects and 2-dimensional figures, and apply key numeric and algebraic skills in problem solving. Students will also
have opportunities to consolidate core skills and deepen their understanding of key mathematical concepts, as well
as foster patience, tolerance, humility, and sharing, and the continuous pursuit of the common good, through
problem solving.
Measurement 15 days
Exploring Relationships 10 days
Proportional Reasoning 15 days
Linear Relationships 25 days
Algebraic Models 10 days
Geometry 10 days
EVALUATION:
Evaluation is based on overall expectations of the course. These can be found at
http:www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/secondary/subjects.html
Throughout the semester, students will be assessed using a variety of techniques including: unit tests,
assignments, and investigations. The final evaluation will consist of the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics
(EQAO test) and a culminating activity.
LATE/MISSED EVALUATI0NS:
Students are expected to complete and/or submit all assessment and evaluation activities on the date determined
by the teacher. The teacher (and/or principal when necessary) will decide if a late activity will be accepted for
evaluation purposes or only for formative assessment with no level/mark recorded for grading.
Learning Skills: regular attendance, working independently, teamwork, organization, work habits,
initiative, risk-taking, time-management, perseverance, questioning, curiosity and a love of learning are all
essential to success in this course.
The administration of the Grade 9 Assessment of mathematics will be held over two days, in January for
semester 1 students and June for students in semester 2. Students will complete multiple choice and
open response questions. Please visit the EQAO web-site for more information. (www.eqao.com)
